A digital fraud case involving approximately Rs 24 crore has surfaced in Gorakhpur, where a private company was allegedly targeted through a sophisticated scheme. The alleged fraud remained undetected for a long period due to the methods used by the accused.

According to reports, the accused repeatedly sent screenshots and transaction messages claiming that payments worth lakhs of rupees had been transferred to the company. The mobile screen displays appeared to show that the full amount had been credited, but only Re 1 was actually deposited into the account.

The company reportedly did not initially suspect any wrongdoing because the accused had first carried out small genuine transactions to build trust. They later allegedly began obtaining goods and services by showing fake payments of larger amounts.

The alleged fraud came to light when the company’s accounts department matched bank statements with payment records. Transactions claimed to be worth lakhs of rupees were found to involve extremely small amounts. In several cases, only Re 1 had been transferred.

According to Gorakhpur Police, the accused used fake screenshots, edited bank messages and digital technology in carrying out the alleged fraud. Police said the network appeared to be operating in a planned manner.

Following the complaint, police and the cyber cell launched an investigation. Preliminary findings reportedly identified the involvement of 21 people, after which an FIR was registered against them.

Investigating agencies are now examining bank accounts, mobile numbers and details of online transactions. Police suspect the operation may involve an organised cyber gang active across multiple states.

Cases of digital fraud have increased in Uttar Pradesh in recent years, with cyber criminals adopting new methods to target companies and business operators.

Trade organisations have expressed concern over the incident. Business representatives said relying solely on screenshots or messages as proof of payment has become highly risky.

Experts advised that confirmation of large payments should only be made after the amount is credited directly into the bank account. They said mobile screens or messages alone should not be treated as proof of payment.

The alleged Rs 24 crore fraud in Gorakhpur has drawn attention within the business community. Police officials said the investigation is progressing rapidly and the full network is expected to be uncovered soon.
