India's monsoon has become active once again, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a weather alert for August 4, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, b winds and thunderstorms across several parts of the country. According to the IMD, the weather is expected to have the greatest impact over North India, East India, the Northeast and the western coastal states during the next 24 hours.
The IMD said wind speeds of 50 to 70 kmph may occur in some areas. The prevailing weather conditions could also lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, landslides in hilly regions and rising river water levels.
According to the IMD, adverse weather conditions are likely in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. However, the intensity of rainfall is not expected to be uniform across all states.
While some areas may receive light to moderate rainfall, several locations are likely to experience heavy rain accompanied by b winds. The IMD has advised farmers, fishermen and residents of hilly regions to exercise caution.
Monsoon activity is expected to intensify across several states in North India. Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir may experience heavy rainfall along with b winds.
According to weather experts, continuous rainfall could trigger landslides and road blockages in hilly areas, while waterlogging and local flooding may develop in the plains. A forecast of moderate rainfall and b winds has also been issued for the Delhi-NCR region, which may result in a drop in temperature and relief from humid conditions.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. The IMD estimates that continuous rainfall could increase the water levels of some rivers.
Several districts of Bihar are forecast to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. Similarly, multiple locations in Jharkhand are likely to witness rainfall accompanied by b winds.
After recent rainfall, Gujarat and Maharashtra are again likely to receive heavy rain. Waterlogging may occur in coastal and low-lying areas. The IMD has advised local authorities to remain alert to address any potential flooding or drainage-related issues.
Rainfall is also expected to continue across southern states, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Some areas may experience heavy rain along with b winds. In Kerala, residents of hilly and vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious, as the risk of landslides may persist due to continuous rainfall.
According to the IMD, the current weather pattern is being influenced by multiple active atmospheric systems. A low-level cyclonic circulation persists over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining areas. In addition, a western disturbance is active over the Jammu and Kashmir region at the middle tropospheric level.
The combined influence of these systems is causing cloud cover, rainfall and b winds across different parts of the country. According to weather experts, these systems may keep the monsoon active over the coming days.
