The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for multiple parts of the country for April 17, with heatwave conditions persisting in northern states and rainfall accompanied by b winds forecast in several regions.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by b winds is likely across 13 states, including Delhi, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, and West Bengal.
The department has warned that wind speeds may reach 50 to 60 kmph during thunderstorms, raising the possibility of tree falls, power disruptions, and localised damage.
Heavy rainfall is expected in northeastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim between April 18 and April 20.
Heatwave conditions continue across several northern states, with rising temperatures reported in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The IMD stated that temperatures in northwest India are not expected to see significant changes over the next five days, while central India may witness a rise of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.
In Delhi, partly cloudy conditions are expected on April 17, with a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms in the evening. Cloud cover may persist on April 18, though rainfall chances remain low.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience dry weather, with temperatures in cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, and Bareilly likely to reach 39 to 40 degrees Celsius. In Gorakhpur, temperatures may rise to 42 degrees Celsius, intensifying heatwave conditions.
In Bihar, light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected over the next 48 hours. Patna is likely to record a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, which may rise to 41 degrees Celsius by April 22. Wind speeds of 30 to 50 kmph are also expected.
Rajasthan is forecast to remain largely dry, although light rain or dust storms may occur on April 17 in Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Bikaner divisions. Barmer has recorded maximum temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius.
In Gujarat, weather conditions are expected to remain mainly dry over the next few days, with light rainfall possible in some areas on April 19 and 20. Coastal regions are likely to experience increased heat and humidity.
