Commonwealth Games: India has secured the right to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. India was officially assigned the hosting duties for the 2030 Commonwealth Games during the Commonwealth Games General Assembly meeting held in Glasgow on Wednesday. This is the first time since 2010 that India will host these Games; in 2010, they were organized in New Delhi.
General Assembly Approves
The 74-member General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games approved India's hosting bid. Ahmedabad was previously recommended by the Executive Board. India was represented by Joint Secretary (Sports) Kunal, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi, among other officials.
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, stated that India brings scale, youthful energy, ambition, and a rich culture to the Commonwealth Games. He hailed it as the beginning of a "new golden age" for the Commonwealth Games. Abuja, Nigeria, was also in the running before Ahmedabad was chosen as the host. However, India's successful bid tilted the decision towards Ahmedabad. Consideration for Abuja for the 2034 Games will continue.
PT Usha's Acknowledgment
Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha expressed delight at being awarded the hosting rights, stating that this trust is a matter of honour for India. She added that the 2030 Games will not only mark the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. The first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. In 2010, India hosted these Games in New Delhi. Ahmedabad will host its centenary edition in 2030, which will be considered a significant event in sports history.
