Virat Kohli Turns 38 With 55 ODI Centuries and 10 Major Cricket Records

Virat Kohli: 55 ODI Centuries, 15,000 Runs and 10 Major Career Records

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli turns 38 on Thursday, November 5. His career includes several records that remain unmatched, including 55 ODI centuries, 765 runs in a single World Cup edition and 40 victories as India's Test captain.

Kohli, who made his international debut in 2008, has established numerous records over the past 18 years. His centuries have helped India secure victories in several challenging matches. He is widely known among fans as King Kohli and the Chase Master.

Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the most centuries in ODI cricket, with 55 hundreds to his name.

He scored his 50th ODI century against New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's previous record of 49 centuries. In September 2026, Kohli reached his 55th ODI century against the West Indies.

Kohli achieved another milestone during the match against the West Indies on September 27, 2026, when he completed 15,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Before Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar was the only batter to reach the milestone. However, Kohli achieved the feat in significantly fewer innings. While Tendulkar took 377 innings to score 15,000 ODI runs, Kohli reached the mark in just 303 innings, 74 innings fewer than Tendulkar.

Kohli has also set several records for reaching ODI batting milestones in the fewest innings. He became the fastest batter to reach 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, 13,000 and 14,000 runs in the format.

He subsequently became the fastest to complete 15,000 ODI runs as well.

Kohli recorded a landmark performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup, scoring 765 runs in 11 matches.

His tally included three centuries and six half-centuries. No batter had previously scored as many runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.

The previous record belonged to Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 673 runs during the 2003 World Cup. Kohli surpassed Tendulkar's record after a gap of 20 years.

Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2016, he scored 973 runs in 16 matches. His tally included four centuries and seven half-centuries, making it the highest individual run total in a single IPL season.

Kohli captained India in 68 Test matches, recording 40 victories, 17 defeats and 11 draws.

During his captaincy, India secured several notable Test victories. One of the major milestones came in 2018-19, when India won a Test series in Australia for the first time.

Kohli holds the record for scoring the most double centuries as a Test captain, with seven to his name.

His highest Test score is an unbeaten 254, which he scored against South Africa in Pune in 2019. He also holds the record for the most double centuries by an Indian batter in Test cricket.

Kohli's record in ODI run chases is one of the reasons behind his reputation as the Chase Master.

He has scored 30 centuries while batting in the second innings of ODI matches. India won 25 of the matches in which he registered these centuries.

Kohli added another milestone to his career record on Wednesday, November 4, a day before his 38th birthday.

He scored 74 runs off 51 balls against New Zealand in the first ODI. Following that innings, his total runs while chasing in ODI cricket reached 8,741.

He moved past Sachin Tendulkar, who had scored 8,720 runs while chasing in ODIs.

Kohli holds the record for winning the most Player of the Series awards in international cricket, having received the honour 22 times.

His tally includes 12 awards in ODIs, seven in T20 Internationals and three in Test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar is second on the list with 20 Player of the Series awards.

Kohli retired from T20 International cricket in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025. He currently represents India in the ODI format.

His 74-run innings against New Zealand in the first ODI on November 4 marked another contribution to India's batting line-up. His career records include several milestones that have required sustained performances over multiple years to achieve.
