The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Braj region Mahila Morcha has been embroiled in controversy over its 39-member office-bearer list. The list, issued on October 30 by regional president Puran Lal Lodhi, was withdrawn within hours after objections were raised over one of the names. The party has yet to announce a revised list.
The BJP's newly announced Braj region Mahila Morcha executive committee became the subject of an internal dispute shortly after its formation was announced. Women leaders who had been awaiting organisational appointments received their new responsibilities on October 30, when regional president Puran Lal Lodhi released a list of 39 office-bearers.
Several women leaders from Agra were included in the list. Following its release, several office-bearers shared the announcement on their social media accounts and informed their supporters about their new responsibilities.
However, the list was suddenly removed later that night. According to reports, some party functionaries raised objections to one of the names included in the list. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the state leadership, following which the list was put on hold.
The organisation has not yet clarified when the revised list will be released.
Several women leaders from Agra were among those assigned responsibilities in the list issued on October 30. Upma Gupta was appointed vice-president, while Ranjana Panwar was named general secretary. Shashi was assigned the responsibility of office secretary.
Jyoti Jadaun was appointed IT convener, while Priyanka Dubey was named social media convener. Pratima Bhargava was included as an executive committee member.
The appointments initially generated enthusiasm among the leaders concerned and their supporters. Some office-bearers also updated their social media profiles to reflect their newly announced positions.
However, following the suspension of the list, the situation changed. Several leaders removed the announcement from their social media accounts, although some reportedly continued to display their announced positions in their profiles.
Some party functionaries reportedly disagreed with the inclusion of one individual in the Mahila Morcha executive committee. They alleged that certain necessary considerations had not been taken into account before the person was assigned the position.

A complaint was subsequently submitted to the state leadership. There are indications that the objection led to the decision to suspend the implementation of the list.
It has also been claimed that the individual whose appointment prompted objections had the support of a senior office-bearer from the Braj region. However, this claim has not been officially confirmed.
The party has not publicly disclosed the identity of the person whose inclusion was challenged or the precise reasons behind the dispute. Consequently, it would be premature to hold any particular office-bearer responsible for the controversy.
The BJP considers names at different organisational levels when forming new teams. Factors such as organisational activity, experience and other relevant considerations are taken into account while selecting office-bearers.
The process also involves discussions and necessary verification of names before responsibilities are assigned at the regional level. The list of office-bearers is announced after these procedures.
The controversy surrounding the Braj region Mahila Morcha list has raised questions about this process within the organisation. Party circles are discussing why objections emerged after the list had already been released if the names had been agreed upon earlier.
However, the organisation has not issued any detailed public clarification on the matter so far.
Following the suspension of the 39-member Braj region Mahila Morcha office-bearer list, the revised list is now awaited. The status of the positions assigned to the women leaders named in the original announcement also remains unclear.
The party has not provided any official information on whether all the names in the earlier list will be retained or whether changes will be made.
The position of the new Mahila Morcha executive committee is expected to become clear only after the state leadership takes its next decision. Until then, the list issued on October 30 cannot be considered final.
