India and New Zealand will begin their five-match ODI series on November 4, with the opening match scheduled to take place at Eden Park in Auckland. The two teams have faced each other 123 times in ODI cricket, with India winning 63 matches and New Zealand securing 52 victories.
Following the conclusion of the T20I series, both sides are now preparing for the ODI contest. The Indian squad includes experienced batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Ahead of the series, attention has turned to the head-to-head record between the two teams, which shows India's overall advantage.
India and New Zealand first faced each other in ODI cricket in 1975. Since then, the teams have played 123 matches against each other.
India have won 63 of those encounters, while New Zealand have recorded 52 victories. One match ended in a tie, and seven matches produced no result.
India therefore hold an 11-match advantage over New Zealand in terms of overall ODI victories. However, New Zealand have also secured several wins against India in major encounters. Their contests in the ODI World Cup and other ICC tournaments have featured prominently in the history of their rivalry.
Although India have the advantage in the overall head-to-head record, their performance in New Zealand has been different.
The two teams have played 45 ODIs on New Zealand soil. The hosts have won 26 matches, while India have registered 14 victories. One match ended in a tie, and four matches had no result.
India have won only two bilateral ODI series in New Zealand. Their first series victory came in 2009, when Mahendra Singh Dhoni was captain. India won that series 3-1.
The second victory came in 2019 under Virat Kohli's captaincy. India won the five-match series 4-1.
However, India have not won an ODI in New Zealand since that tour. The upcoming five-match series will provide the team with an opportunity to improve its record in the country.
New Zealand have historically found it difficult to win ODI matches in India. The two teams have played 43 matches on Indian soil, with India winning 32 and New Zealand securing 10 victories. One match ended without a result.

However, New Zealand defeated India in a bilateral ODI series on Indian soil in January 2026. The visitors won the three-match series 2-1, recording their first bilateral ODI series victory in India.
India began the series with a four-wicket victory in the opening match. New Zealand then responded by winning the second ODI by seven wickets.
The visitors secured the series with a 41-run victory in the third match, completing a 2-1 series win.
India will now have an opportunity to respond to that defeat during the upcoming series in New Zealand. However, securing victories against the hosts on their home ground will remain a challenge.
Experienced batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will represent India during the New Zealand tour. Both players have retired from Test and T20 International cricket and are now playing only ODI cricket for India.
Their performances will be closely followed during the five-match series, particularly against New Zealand's pace attack.
Both batters bring extensive international experience to the Indian side. Shubman Gill will captain India in the first three ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain for the final two matches.
The five-match ODI series will begin on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland. The second match will be played in Wellington on November 7, followed by the third ODI in Hamilton on November 10.
The fourth match is scheduled for November 13, while the fifth and final ODI will take place on November 15 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
All five matches will begin at 7:30 am Indian Standard Time.
India recently won the T20I series against New Zealand 3-2. The focus will now shift to the ODI series, where India will face the challenge of improving their record on New Zealand soil.
