India has constructed a strategic road near Doklam in the Ha Valley of Bhutan. This all-weather road will play a vital role in troop deployment, logistics, and defense against China.
India-Bhutan Road: India has built a significant and strategic road in the Ha Valley of Bhutan, located near Doklam. This road will enhance the military and strategic strength of both India and Bhutan. The road has been constructed by the BRO (Border Roads Organisation) at a cost of ₹254 crore. The road is usable in all weather conditions and will directly impact India's border security and efforts to counter China's growing influence.
Why is Connectivity from Ha Valley to Doklam Important?
The Ha Valley is a strategic area located in the western part of Bhutan, just 21 kilometers from Doklam. The Doklam dispute between India and China in 2017 occurred near this location. At that time, China attempted to build a road, which was opposed by the Indian Army. This new road will provide better access and logistical support to Indian and Bhutanese forces in the same area.
The 2017 Doklam Dispute: A Lesson
The Doklam dispute began in June 2017 when China's PLA attempted to construct a road in the Bhutanese territory. India bly opposed this and deployed its troops under "Operation Juniper." This standoff lasted for 72 days, and ultimately China had to retreat. Following this incident, India emphasized strengthening infrastructure in its border areas.
India's Presence in Bhutan: Project Dantak
India's development projects in Bhutan are led by the BRO's 'Project Dantak,' which began in the 1960s. This new road in the Ha Valley is also a part of this project. Five new bridges have been constructed on the road, ensuring its usability in all weather conditions.
Road Inauguration and Diplomatic Significance
On August 1, 2025, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tobgay Tshering, inaugurated the road. The Director General of BRO, Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan, and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi of India were also present on this occasion. The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Wangchuck, also praised this project. This demonstrates the strength of India-Bhutan relations.
Military and Logistics Advantage
This road will help Indian and Bhutanese forces move quickly towards the Chumbi Valley. The Chumbi Valley is located near Tibet, where the Chinese army maintains a presence. If a crisis situation arises, this road will give India the opportunity to act quickly.
Contribution to Tourism and Local Development
The Ha Valley is a beautiful region of Bhutan. Now, with this road, it will be easier to reach, which will promote tourism. In addition, this road will be helpful for local businesses and ordinary people in fulfilling their daily needs.
