Starting today, many goods in India have become cheaper due to changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Now, only two GST slabs remain in the country — 5% and 18%. Previously, there was also a 12% slab, which has now been removed.
New Delhi: As of today, September 22, many items in India have become cheaper. The reason for this is the changes in GST, under which only two slabs—5% and 18%—now remain in the country. The previously existing 12% slab has been removed. This move will directly provide relief to the common public on certain goods. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to buy and use indigenous products. However, politics has also started over this.
Former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal targeted PM Modi, writing on his X (formerly Twitter) account that if the Prime Minister wants the public to adopt indigenous products, he should start with himself. He sarcastically remarked that PM Modi should abandon the foreign aircraft he travels in daily and the foreign goods he uses, and instead adopt indigenous ones.
Kejriwal's Sarcasm Towards the Prime Minister
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, commenting on PM Modi's appeal on his X account, took a dig at him. He wrote, 'Prime Minister ji, if you want the public to use indigenous goods, then you yourself should use indigenous goods and services.' Kejriwal sarcastically stated that the Prime Minister should abandon the use of foreign aircraft and foreign products that he uses daily. He added that Modi ji should set an example for the public by ceasing to use foreign goods and services all day long.
In his post, Arvind Kejriwal also called on Prime Minister Modi to shut down American companies. He wrote that Donald Trump insults India and Indians daily. In such a situation, the Prime Minister needs to take practical steps, not just give sermons. Kejriwal argued that the public expects concrete action from their Prime Minister, not just slogans and speeches. He stated that if the PM himself takes steps in favor of indigenous products and national interest, the common public will also follow suit.
Changes in GST and Their Impact on Consumers
The changes in GST slabs, effective from September 22, mean that only two slabs now remain in India — 5% and 18%. Previously, a 12% slab also existed. The impact of this change on consumers is as follows: Many daily-use goods and services have now fallen under the 5% GST slab. A 18% GST will continue to apply to medium and expensive goods.
This will bring uniformity and simplicity to the prices of goods in the market. Consumers will find shopping easier and encounter more affordable prices. Prime Minister Modi termed this an opportunity to "promote indigenous products" and appealed to all citizens to prioritize Indian products.
