The Government of India has signed a contract worth Rs 62,370 crore with HAL for the acquisition of 97 Tejas Mk1A aircraft. This includes 68 single-seater and 29 twin-seater aircraft, which will enhance the Indian Air Force's strength.

New Delhi: On Thursday, the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, signed a historic contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk1A (LCA Tejas Mk1A) for the Indian Air Force. This agreement is a significant step towards bolstering the Indian Air Force's strength and fortifying indigenous aircraft manufacturing.

The total cost of this contract is Rs 62,370 crore, excluding taxes. This acquisition includes 68 single-seater fighter aircraft and 29 twin-seater trainer aircraft, along with associated equipment and support systems, which will further strengthen the Air Force's operational capabilities.

A Step Towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India'

The acquisition of Tejas Mk1A is considered a crucial part of the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. This state-of-the-art indigenous aircraft, manufactured by HAL, will not only strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force but also help India become self-reliant in global defence production.

This indigenously developed aircraft will boost India's defence industry and play a vital role in reducing dependence on foreign technology in the future. Through this 'Made in India' aircraft, both technical expertise and production capacity will increase.

Enhancement of Air Force's Operational Capability

The induction of Tejas Mk1A aircraft will provide the Indian Air Force with fast, modern, and reliable fighter jets. This will boost the existing squadron strength and help fill the void created by the phased retirement of older aircraft like the MiG-21.

The deployment of these aircraft will enhance the Air Force's defence capabilities and strengthen wartime operations. This aircraft has been designed to meet modern combat requirements and will elevate India's air security to new heights.

Boost for Domestic Defence Industry

This agreement will not only augment the Air Force's strength but also significantly benefit the nation's defence industry and supply chain. HAL and its collaborating Indian companies will gain substantial technical and economic advantages.

Technical Specifications of Tejas Mk1A

The Tejas Mk1A incorporates several state-of-the-art systems. It features advanced technologies such as Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, self-protection suite, and control surface actuators. The integration of these systems makes the aircraft a cutting-edge fighter jet.

The LCA Mk1A is the most advanced variant of the indigenously designed and manufactured fighter aircraft. It will serve as a powerful platform to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Air Force.

Strategic Importance for the Indian Air Force

The acquisition of Tejas Mk1A aircraft is also strategically significant for the Air Force. This aircraft will play a crucial role in enhancing the nation's air power, strengthening border security, and providing rapid response in crisis situations.
