India Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms: Weather Alert Issued

The monsoon has now picked up pace across the country, bringing relief from the scorching heat and humidity to the general public. Specifically, a drop in temperature has been recorded due to continuous rainfall in North India and the eastern states.

Weather Alert: The monsoon has made a b entry in many parts of India. The deteriorating weather, with heavy rain and thunderstorms across the country, has provided relief from the heat, but it is also becoming a problem in many areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning, and b winds in several states for July 9, 2025.

The greatest danger is reported in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and the northeastern states, where there is a risk of landslides and flash floods along with rain in the mountains. At the same time, heavy showers and waterlogging may occur in plain areas like Bihar, UP, MP, Odisha, and Delhi-NCR.

Himachal-Uttarakhand to face more wrath

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on July 9. Several roads have already been damaged in these areas, and rivers are flowing near the danger mark. The weather department has advised local authorities to remain vigilant and to control movement in the hilly areas. Besides, the weather is likely to remain very bad in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for the next two days.

Monsoon will remain active in North India, rain in Delhi-NCR as well

A warning has been issued for thunderstorms and lightning in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh on July 9. Delhi residents will definitely get relief from the heat, but waterlogging and traffic jams may occur. Heavy rainfall is also expected in some districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan between July 10 and 14.

Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. This rain is proving favorable for farmers for sowing crops, especially for paddy cultivation. However, there is also a possibility of waterlogging in the fields and damage to crops due to excessive rain. A warning of heavy rain has also been issued for Vidarbha and Bengal for the next two days.

No relief in West and Northeast India either

Heavy rainfall is expected in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and central Maharashtra on July 9 and 10. According to the weather department, heavy rainfall may also occur in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions on July 12 and 13. Continuous rainfall is expected to continue in the northeastern states – Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura – for the next one week. Very heavy rainfall may occur in Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram between July 11 and 14, which will pose a threat of a rapid increase in the water levels of the rivers.

A warning has been issued for thunderstorms and lightning on July 9 in Gaya, Nawada, Jamui, Banka, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia districts. The speed of the winds can reach 30–40 km/hr. People are advised to avoid staying in the open and to take shelter in safe places.
