Indian Airlines Face 183 Technical Malfunctions in 2025: Government Reports Decline, Tightens Security After Accident

183 Technical Malfunctions Recorded in Indian Airlines in 2025 So Far. The government reported a decrease compared to previous years. Security checks have been further tightened after the Ahmedabad accident.

Flight Technical Issues: Concerns are mounting regarding technical issues in Indian airlines. A total of 183 technical malfunctions have been recorded in various domestic and international flights in the country up to July 23, 2025. While sharing this information in Parliament, the government stated that although this figure is lower compared to previous years, it remains a cause for concern.

Decline Compared to Previous Years

According to Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, a total of 421 technical glitches were reported in 2024, while this number was 448 in 2023. Prior to that, 528 technical malfunctions were reported in 2022 and 514 in 2021. These figures indicate that the number of technical flaws has been gradually decreasing in recent years, but the problem has not been completely eliminated.

DGCA Intensifies Action After Ahmedabad Accident

On June 12, 2025, an Air India flight Boeing 787-8 going from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff. This accident resulted in the death of 260 passengers. Following this incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has further tightened safety regulations and inspection procedures. The DGCA has ordered special inspections of those parts of the aircraft that may be directly affected by technical failures.

2094 Inspections in the Last Five Years

The government also reported that a total of 2094 cases of serious technical flaws were investigated from 2020 to 2024. Most of these cases came under regular monitoring, but some were also part of the rapid investigations conducted after serious incidents. Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol said that the number of technical glitches in 2024 decreased by approximately 6 percent compared to 2023.

Fluctuations in Passenger Complaints

The DGCA has received 3925 passenger complaints so far this year. This number was 4016 in 2024, while 5513 complaints were received in 2023. In 2022, 3782 and in 2021, 4113 complaints were registered. These figures clearly indicate that passengers remain concerned about service quality and safety standards.

Rules in Accordance with ICAO and EASA Standards

The Central Government has clarified that the rules related to aircraft safety in India are made in accordance with the standards of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). The DGCA updates these rules from time to time so that all airlines can be monitored and evaluated effectively.

Monitoring and Accountability of Airlines

The government has also stated that all airlines are required to report technical malfunctions immediately and comply with DGCA guidelines. Ignoring or delaying the reporting of technical flaws raises questions about the airline's accountability. The DGCA also uses options such as audits and suspensions from time to time.
