Kanpur is witnessing an intensified spell of heat, with b sunshine from early Monday morning and rising temperatures making outdoor movement difficult by afternoon. According to Meteorological Department data, the city's maximum temperature increased by about 3.2 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours. Increased humidity has further heightened discomfort across the city.
The impact of the heat was noticeable from around 8 a.m., with conditions becoming increasingly harsh as the day progressed. After noon, roads in several parts of the city appeared largely deserted, while pedestrian and vehicular movement declined even at usually busy intersections. Office workers sought shade while travelling outdoors. Rickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers reported a drop in passengers during the afternoon as residents limited travel to essential activities.
Children, elderly residents and daily wage workers have been among the most affected by the prevailing weather conditions. Government hospitals and private clinics have reported an increase in patients complaining of headaches, dizziness, weakness and dehydration. Doctors said that rising temperatures combined with humidity can lead to rapid loss of body fluids. Residents have been advised to drink sufficient water and minimise exposure to direct sunlight. Medical professionals have also urged special care for children and senior citizens, who are more vulnerable to heat and heatwave conditions.
The impact of the heat is also visible in local markets. Shopkeepers reported a decline in customer footfall during afternoon hours. At the same time, vendors selling juice, shikanji, sugarcane juice, coconut water and cold beverages have recorded increased sales. Crowds have been seen at roadside cold-drink stalls as residents seek relief from the heat through frequent consumption of chilled beverages. Several social organisations are also providing free cold drinking water to passersby at different locations.
Weather experts said that increased moisture in the air is causing residents to experience conditions that feel hotter than the actual temperature. Heat during the day and humidity at night have added to public discomfort. In several areas, residents have reported difficulty sleeping at night. Coolers and fans have not been providing complete relief.
The increase in electricity demand has also led to complaints of low voltage and power outages in some localities. The power department said additional arrangements have been made in view of rising demand and efforts are underway to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers.
The Meteorological Department said the monsoon is gradually advancing across Uttar Pradesh and is expected to reach Kanpur by June 20. If weather conditions remain favourable, pre-monsoon activity could begin earlier. Forecasts indicate the possibility of cloud cover, light rainfall and b winds over the coming days. These developments may bring a slight reduction in temperatures, although humid conditions could persist.
Farmers in Kanpur and surrounding rural areas have begun preparations for kharif crops. Field ploughing and seed arrangements are underway, but large-scale sowing has not started due to the absence of rainfall. Farmers said the timely arrival of the monsoon would accelerate cultivation of paddy and other kharif crops. Adequate rainfall is also expected to reduce irrigation expenses and support better crop yields.
Demand for water has risen alongside the heat. In several areas, residents have been seen queuing during morning and evening hours to collect water. The municipal corporation said special monitoring is being carried out to maintain smooth water supply. However, complaints of low water pressure have been reported in some localities. Residents said any disruption in water supply amid rising temperatures could further increase difficulties.
Children returning from school are also facing challenging weather conditions. Parents said bringing children home during afternoon hours has become difficult. Several schools have advised students to drink adequate water and take precautions against sun exposure. Sports grounds have remained largely empty during the afternoon, with children preferring to go outdoors only after sunset.
Residents said the intensity of the heat has not eased even by mid-June this year. According to local observations, signs of the monsoon are usually visible by this period, but people are having to wait longer this time. Attention remains focused on the Meteorological Department’s forecast, with expectations that the arrival of the monsoon around June 20 could bring changes in weather conditions and relief from the ongoing heat and humidity.
