Karnataka Deputy CM's Scooter Ride Sparks Controversy Over Traffic Violations

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Reaches Bengaluru's Hebbal Flyover Inspection on Scooter. Questions Raised as Scooter Has 34 Traffic Violations and ₹18,500 Fine. Controversy Deepens.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently arrived at the Hebbal Flyover in Bengaluru to inspect the ongoing construction work. During this time, he reached the site on a two-wheeler. This visit was intended to connect directly with the public and assess the actual situation of the work. However, this initiative turned into controversy when it was revealed that the scooter he was riding had 34 pending traffic violations and a total outstanding fine of ₹18,500 recorded against it.

Inspection Riding on Scooter

On August 5, DK Shivakumar shared a video on Instagram in which he was seen sitting on the back seat of a scooter wearing a shawl, sunglasses, and a half-helmet. In the video, he stated that the work on the Hebbal flyover loop would be completed soon and that it would greatly relieve the traffic system in the city. He called it the government's commitment to improving Bengaluru.

Revealed on KSP App, Scooter Has 34 Traffic Violations Recorded

Shortly after the video went viral, social media users and opposition parties checked the scooter's information. It came to light through the Karnataka State Police (KSP) app that the scooter on which Shivakumar was riding, with registration number KA04 JZ2087, had a total of 34 traffic violations recorded against it. Most of these violations include signal jumping, over-speeding, and disregarding traffic rules. The total amount of the fine was ₹18,500.

Opposition Targets, BJP and JDS Both Raise Questions

The BJP immediately seized the issue and shared pictures of Shivakumar's scooter ride on social media, highlighting the traffic violation information. BJP spokespersons questioned whether such negligence is befitting of a person holding a responsible position. They sarcastically asked whether the government itself would not follow the rules. The BJP also pointed out that another challan was added during the same journey, with an additional fine of ₹500 for wearing a half-helmet.

The JDS also reacted sharply on Twitter and asked whether the Deputy Chief Minister of a state is respecting the rules by riding a vehicle with such a heavy traffic violation amount. They called it the wrong message to the public and demanded accountability.

Scooter Owner Pays Fine, But Questions Remain

After the controversy escalated, the owner of the scooter immediately went to the police station and deposited the amount of all outstanding fines. However, this whole incident has raised the question of whether leaders should not be more cautious and responsible in public life. Traffic rules are as mandatory for the general public as they are for those in governance.
