Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand has undergone extensive reconstruction and development over the past 13 years following the devastating 2013 disaster. The shrine, whose future had been questioned after the calamity, has since emerged with upgraded infrastructure, modern facilities and a rising number of pilgrims.
The night of June 16-17, 2013, is recorded as one of the most severe natural disasters in Uttarakhand’s history. Floodwaters triggered by the breach of Chorabari Tal and heavy rainfall caused widespread destruction in Kedarnath Dham and surrounding areas. Thousands of people were affected, and the landscape of Kedarpuri underwent major changes.
At the time, it was difficult to envision the Kedarnath pilgrimage returning to its previous scale. Reconstruction efforts initiated after the disaster gradually transformed the shrine and surrounding area.
Before the disaster, Kedarnath Dham received approximately four to five lakh pilgrims annually. The number has since increased substantially.
In 2023, around 19.61 lakh devotees visited the shrine, while more than 17.68 lakh pilgrims arrived in 2025. In 2026, more than 12.4 lakh devotees had already reached the shrine within one and a half months of the pilgrimage season commencing.
The increase in footfall reflects improvements in pilgrimage management, security arrangements and visitor facilities.
Following the disaster, the Central and State governments prioritised the reconstruction of Kedarnath. The redevelopment programme, described as a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, led to large-scale construction and infrastructure development in Kedarpuri.
Modern residential buildings were constructed for priests, while new cottages and accommodation facilities were developed for pilgrims. The shrine area now has arrangements to accommodate more than 10,000 visitors.
The redevelopment programme also included expansion of the temple precinct, construction of ghats, protective embankments, a helipad, health centres and public amenities.
The route from Rudraprayag to Gaurikund suffered extensive damage during the 2013 disaster. It was subsequently redeveloped under the All Weather Road project, improving safety and accessibility for pilgrims.
A new pedestrian route of approximately 10 kilometres from Bhimbali to Kedarnath was also constructed. New halts, including Chhoti Lincholi, Lincholi and Rudra Point, were developed along the route. The pathway was widened and equipped with railings for safety.
Improved food, healthcare and rest facilities have also been established at various points along the pilgrimage route.
The Indian Air Force played a key role in the reconstruction process. Despite challenging terrain, more than 850 tonnes of construction material were transported to Kedarnath using Mi-17 and Chinook helicopters.
The transported equipment included JCB machines, Poclain excavators, dumpers and other heavy machinery, enabling construction activities to continue in difficult conditions.
Reconstruction and development projects worth approximately ₹700 crore are being implemented in Kedarpuri.
Works worth about ₹125 crore under the first phase have been completed. Most projects under the second phase, valued at approximately ₹200 crore, have also been completed. Projects worth more than ₹225 crore are currently underway in the third phase.
In addition, around ₹200 crore has been spent on the development of supporting infrastructure.
Kedarnath has witnessed extensive reconstruction and infrastructure development since the 2013 disaster. Upgraded facilities, enhanced security arrangements and improved management systems have contributed to the continued growth of the pilgrimage and increased visitor numbers.
