Method of Worship
For the evening puja, first, tie the red thread with 16 knots on your hand, which was tied on the first day of the vrat. Then, light 16 ghee diyas in front of Mother Mahalakshmi and begin the puja with incense and lamps. It is important to note that Harsingar flowers should not be offered to the Goddess.
Next, place sixteen items in one winnowing fan, cover it with another, and make a resolution to donate these items in the name of the Goddess. Recite the following mantra for the resolution:
“Kshirōdārṇava saṁbhūtā lakṣmīścaṁdra sahodarā. O Mother Mahalakshmi, born from the ocean of milk and the sister of the moon, I am donating all these items in your name.”
After this, light the lamp's flame and chant the Mahalakshmi mantra:
“Om Shriṁ Hrīṁ Shriṁ Kamale Kamalālaye Prasīda Prasīda Shri Hrīṁ Shriṁ Mahālakṣmyai Namaḥ.”
After chanting, perform Aarti for the Goddess and offer white sweets as prasad. Afterward, offer water to the stars and complete the Aarti.
Conclusion of Vrat and Significance of Food Offering
If the devotee is married, hold your spouse's hand or call out three times towards the north:
“O Mother Mahalakshmi, please come to my home.”
After this, set aside food separately for yourself and Mother Mahalakshmi on different plates. Married couples can use a silver plate for Mother Lakshmi. After eating, remove your plate but leave Mother Lakshmi's plate there. The next morning, feed this food to a cow and donate the items from the winnowing fan to a Lakshmi temple. Keep the red thread with 16 knots safely in your locker.
