English Premier League giants Manchester City suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen at their home ground, the Etihad Stadium, in the Champions League. This loss marks City's first home group/league stage defeat in seven years.

SPORTS NEWS: Manchester City suffered a second consecutive defeat, which was also their first home loss in the Champions League group/league stage in seven years, as Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium. City's previous defeat at home before the knockout stage was in September 2018 when Lyon beat them 2-1.

Leverkusen's Strong Start

City's last home defeat before the Champions League knockout rounds was in 2018 when Lyon clinched a 2-1 victory. In that match, Pep Guardiola faced a touchline ban, with Mikel Arteta deputizing for him in the dugout. However, on Tuesday, Guardiola watched the entire match. He made 10 changes to his team following their Premier League loss against Newcastle, including benching Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Jérémy Doku.

Despite Guardiola fielding fresh players, the plan did not work. From the initial minutes, Leverkusen took control of the game and kept Manchester City under pressure. The first goal of the match was scored by Alejandro Grimaldo from a superb cross by Christian Kofane. This goal was a setback for City, as the team had shown ball control in the opening minutes.

City's best chance in the first half came through Tijjani Reijnders, who challenged former Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, but the goalkeeper made a superb save. City managed only two shots on target by half-time.

Substitutions and Second Goal

After half-time, Guardiola brought on Foden, Doku, and Nico O’Reilly. However, just nine minutes later, Leverkusen doubled their lead. Ibrahim Maja sent a brilliant ball into the box, which Patrik Schick headed into the net. After this goal, City had to try hard, but Leverkusen's b defensive strategy and swift counter-attacks prevented the team from scoring.

Manchester City maintained possession for most of the match, but Leverkusen exerted pressure through quick breaks and excellent positioning. Guardiola's fresh players attempted to improve the game, but a lack of effective striking and weakness in the final third prevented the team from avoiding defeat. Erling Haaland came off the bench but could not score.

Leverkusen employed a fast and organized strategy. For the first goal, they distracted City's defense, while for the second, they utilized precise passing and a header in the box. Throughout the match, the team displayed excellent coordination in counter-attacks and positioning.
