Man Stages Fake Kidnapping After Losing Funds in Online Gaming

A young man in Varanasi falsely reported a kidnapping after losing ₹50,000 in an online Rummy game. Police quickly debunked the claim and recovered him safely.

Varanasi: A young man in the Bhullanpur area staged a false kidnapping after losing ₹50,000 in online gaming, but the police debunked his story and safely recovered him.

According to information, Amit Chauhan, a resident of Unchahwa (Tarwa) in Azamgarh district and employed in Ahmedabad, arrived in Varanasi by train on Tuesday. During the train journey, he lost approximately ₹50,000 playing an online game called Rummy.

When his account was nearly depleted and he had only ₹164 remaining, Amit called his sister-in-law, claiming he had been kidnapped and a ransom of ₹50,000 was being demanded. He even provided his own bank account number for the ransom payment.

His family informed the police, prompting a team from the Sigra police station, under the guidance of senior officers, to become active. Investigation of the account number revealed that it did not contain a substantial amount of money and that funds had already been transferred through the gaming app. The police traced Amit's location based on his mobile number and apprehended him from Bhullanpur.

The police stated that the young man was distressed due to losses in online gaming and fabricated this story as a result. He was handed over to his family, who thanked the police for their assistance.
