MP Navratri: Umaria Imposes Meat, Egg, Fish Ban; Traders Protest Unilateral Decision

During Navratri, from September 22 to October 2, the sale of eggs, meat, and fish will be banned at shops in Umaria and Maihar, Madhya Pradesh. Traders have protested against the administration's unilateral decision.

Umaria: As Navratri begins, the Umaria district administration has made a significant decision. The sale of eggs, meat, and fish will be completely banned at shops in the district until October 2. This decision was taken at a meeting of the District Level Peace Committee. The administration states that maintaining a devotional and peaceful environment in the district during Navratri is a priority. However, this decision has met with b disapproval from those involved in the egg, meat, and fish businesses. They claim that the administration did not consult them, calling it a unilateral decision.

Umaria Collector Dharanendra Kumar Jain informed that a Peace Committee meeting was held concerning Durga Puja and Navratri. Dignitaries and representatives of religious organizations from the district participated in it. During the meeting, a suggestion arose to ban the sale of eggs, meat, and fish during Navratri to avoid disrupting the religious atmosphere and fasting experience. The Collector stated that inspections and actions would be ensured in this regard.

Decision Taken to Maintain Religious Sanctity During the Festival

The former district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad supported this proposal, stating that it is essential to create a devotional atmosphere during the nine days of Navratri. If shops selling meat, fish, and eggs remain open in the market during this period, it affects the sentiments of devotees. He added that this decision is welcome as it preserves the sanctity of the festival and prevents feelings of aversion or discomfort among people.

From a religious and cultural perspective, this step seemed appropriate to some, but those involved in businesses do not consider it fair. They argue that the administration should consider the problems of traders and the daily needs of their families.

Egg and Meat Vendors Oppose the Decision

Wholesale egg trader Anil Kumar stated that this decision would severely impact his business. He mentioned that in his 38 years, he had never witnessed such a ban. Now, with shops closed for nine days, all his stock will perish. Moreover, the daily livelihoods of his family and employees will also be affected.

Traders also state that the administration did not consult anyone, and this decision was taken unilaterally. They suggested that if some restrictions are imposed during the festival, similar restrictions should also apply to other businesses, such as liquor shops. They argue that restricting only meat, fish, and egg vendors is not fair.

Directives to Maintain Devotional Atmosphere During Navratri

The district administration states that this decision has been taken from a religious and cultural perspective. The Peace Committee decided that avoiding any sales is essential to maintain a devotional atmosphere during Navratri. The administration will also ensure strict action against establishments that violate the ban.

Directives have been issued in the Umaria Municipal Council area for all egg, meat, fish, and mutton vendors to keep their shops closed from September 22 to October 2. The administration also stated that regular inspections would be conducted to ensure no irregularities occur during this period.

Dispute Between Traders and Administration in Umaria

Traders contend that this decision is financially detrimental to them. They believe the administration made a unilateral decision without consultation. Conversely, the administration states that respecting religious sentiments is a priority. This decision aims to maintain peace in Umaria during the festival.

This dispute has become a topic of discussion in the district. While devotees consider it a welcome step, businessmen are expressing concern and displeasure. It remains to be seen whether a balance can be maintained between the administration and the traders.
