The beginning of Islamic year 1447 is now just a sighting of the moon away. The entire Muslim community's eyes are currently fixed on the sky, awaiting the appearance of the new moon. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, not only marks the start of a new year, but also brings with it a tale of sacrifice, courage, and martyrdom. This month holds deep significance in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions in Karbala.
Muharram 2025: Probable Date for Moon Sighting
This time, the moon for Muharram 2025 is expected to be sighted today, June 26th (Thursday). If the moon is sighted on this day, the Islamic New Year, Hijri year 1447, will begin from this evening. However, if for any reason the moon is not sighted on June 26th, then Muharram and the Islamic New Year will commence from June 27th (Friday).
The calculation of Islamic months is based on the lunar sighting; therefore, the beginning of any month is considered to start only after the sighting of the new moon. This is why the beginning of Muharram falls on different dates according to the Gregorian calendar each year.
Why the Month of Muharram is Special
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, in which even war is forbidden. This month is a time for worship of Allah, introspection, and restraint. However, for the Shia Muslim community, this month is especially symbolic of mourning and sacrifice. It is the month in which the Battle of Karbala took place—a historical war that changed Islamic history forever.
10th Muharram: The Significance of Youm-e-Ashura
The 10th day of Muharram is known as 'Ashura'. This day is commemorated in the memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (RA) and his 72 companions. This battle took place in Karbala, Iraq, on 10th Muharram 61 Hijri (680 AD), in which the army of Yazid crossed all limits of cruelty. Imam Hussein refused to bow down to injustice and sacrificed himself, along with his family, for religion and truth. This day is a symbol of patience, dedication, and the victory of truth for Muslims all over the world.
Muharram Rituals and Events
During the month of Muharram, especially on the 10th day, Muslims around the world observe several traditions:
- The Shia community takes out Tazia, mourns, and presents the scene of the Karbala event.
- Black clothes are worn to express mourning.
- Some Muslims fast, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
- Majlises (religious gatherings) are held in mosques and Imambaras, where the sacrifice of Imam Hussein is recounted.
- Community langar (free kitchen) and kheer (a sweet rice pudding) are distributed to provide food to the poor and needy.
Remembrance of Martyrdom to be Observed Worldwide
The month of Muharram is observed with reverence and mourning not only in India or Pakistan, but also in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and countries in America and Europe. Remembering the event of Karbala is not just a religious ritual, but a moral message – that one should raise their voice against oppression, no matter the consequences.
The beginning of Muharram 2025 will once again remind us that Islam is not just about worship, but also a symbol of standing for justice, truth, and humanity. As soon as the moon is sighted, while the Islamic New Year begins, the memories of the Karbala martyrdom will be revived.
