Nanded: A 17-year-old rape victim in Nanded, Maharashtra, died after taking an abortion pill. The victim was a 12th-grade student and was four and a half months pregnant. Police have arrested the accused tutor under the POCSO Act. The deceased teenager was given abortion medication by a doctor at a clinic in Nanded, at the insistence of her family, which led to bleeding and a deterioration of her condition. Police are also investigating the doctor's negligence and adherence to medical protocols.
Tutor's Exploitation of 12th-Grade Student
According to information received from the police, the deceased student was in the 12th grade and was approximately four and a half months pregnant. The accused tutor, Sandesh Gundekar, is alleged to have continuously sexually exploited the teenager since December 2024. Police stated that the accused had also promised to marry the student.
Assistant Inspector Pandurang Shinde of Bhatkuli Police Station stated that the accused was arrested from his home in Yavatmal. Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and ensured his arrest. The victim had provided full details of the incident to the police before her death.
Condition Worsened After Taking Abortion Pill
The teenager's family stated that when they learned of their daughter's pregnancy, her father took her to a clinic about 110 kilometers from Nanded on Saturday. There, the doctor gave her abortion medication.
Within a few hours, the teenager began to experience severe bleeding, and her condition deteriorated. She was initially admitted to a private hospital, where her condition did not stabilize despite initial treatment. Subsequently, she was taken to a larger hospital in Nanded, but doctors declared her dead.
Police Investigation and Suspicions
Police have seized medical records and samples of the abortion medication. Senior police officials state that the doctor's negligence or any irregularities are being investigated. Police are also probing whether the doctor had the legal permission to perform an abortion on the teenager.
Police believe that every aspect will be thoroughly investigated to hold the culprits accountable under the law.
