NDA to Finalize Vice Presidential Candidate: Modi and Nadda to Decide

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President JP Nadda will select the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Vice Presidential election on Tuesday. This decision was taken at a high-level meeting of NDA leaders held in New Delhi on Thursday.

New Delhi: The political atmosphere in the country is currently abuzz with activity surrounding the Vice Presidential election. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is holding a crucial meeting on Tuesday to select its candidate for the post of Vice President. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President JP Nadda will finalize the candidate's name at this meeting. This decision comes at a time when former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has suddenly resigned from his post due to health reasons.

Meeting Held Under the Chairmanship of Rajnath Singh

A high-level meeting of the NDA was held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, in which Prime Minister Modi and BJP President JP Nadda were authorized to choose the candidate for the post of Vice President. Representatives of all NDA allies were present at this meeting, and they supported this decision.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the media after the meeting that the candidate chosen by the Prime Minister and JP Nadda would receive the united support of all NDA allies.

Support of Allies and Political Equations

Senior Union Ministers Amit Shah, Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde, Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Lavu Krishna Devarayalu, and Republican Party of India leader Ramdas Athawale, among other key allies, also attended the meeting. Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena announced on Wednesday itself that he would unconditionally support the BJP candidate, strengthening the NDA's strategy. In this way, selecting and supporting the NDA candidate seems possible without any major political obstacles.

Importance of the Vice Presidential Post and Election Process

The post of Vice President is not only important as the second highest constitutional post, but he also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This gives the position a significant role in political balance and decision-making within the Parliament. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members from both houses of India – the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The upcoming Vice Presidential election will be held on September 9, 2025.

The NDA has a clear majority in Parliament, making their candidate's victory highly likely. Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post midway, citing health reasons, making the election for the post of Vice President mandatory. Following his resignation, discussions about alleged differences between the government and Dhankhar have intensified. However, no such disagreement has been officially confirmed.

Due to his resignation, choosing the Vice Presidential candidate has become even more important for the NDA, as this post is considered crucial for maintaining political influence in Parliament. The selection of this candidate by the NDA's top leadership is expected to add a new dimension to the country's politics. The decision of PM Modi and JP Nadda has been supported by all NDA allies, making it likely that this election will smoothly conclude in favor of the NDA.
