Nepal PM Oli Resigns Amidst Gen-Z Led Protests; Party Condemns Violence, Questions Security Response

Following Gen-Z Movement in Nepal, PM Oli Resigns. Oli's Party UML Condemns Violence, Demands Identification of Perpetrators and Questions Role of Security Agencies.

Gen-Z Protest: Following the Gen-Z movement and violent protests that began in Nepal on Monday, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday. Subsequently, his party, the Nepali Communist Party (UML), issued its first reaction. The party has raised questions about the identification of those responsible for the violence and the role of security agencies.

Oli's Party Calls Violence Tragic

In a statement released on Thursday, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel stated that the movement originated due to demands for the lifting of the social media ban, an end to corruption, and good governance. However, he added that some individuals turned it into violence and destruction. The party stated that arson, looting, and violence caused damage to Nepal's parliament, the President's office, Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, constitutional bodies, airports, police stations, and private property. UML expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The party described the violence that occurred over two days as destructive for the country, suggesting it could take decades for the nation to recover from this devastation. UML demanded the identification of those responsible for the violence and strict legal action against them.

Questions Raised on Police and Security Agencies

UML questioned the delayed and inadequate response of security agencies, including the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the Nepali Army, during the unrest. The party stated that the slow and limited stance of these agencies during the violence proved dangerous for the country and its citizens. Additionally, the party emphasized the need for constitutional and democratic solutions.

Demand for Reforms

UML urged the President to implement anti-corruption measures, eliminate nepotism, and ensure good governance. It also highlighted the need to prioritize youth employment, social justice, and the country's stability. The party stated that the current situation in the country can only be resolved through meaningful dialogue and the participation of all political parties.

Instructions to Party Cadres

UML instructed its cadres to remain united and maintain morale. They were also asked to assist in cleaning up damaged government offices and public spaces, promote social harmony, and support affected citizens. The party clarified that those participating in peaceful protests cannot engage in violence and that identifying the perpetrators of violence is essential.
