PoK Students Launch Massive Protests Over Fee Hikes, Lack of Facilities; Violence Erupts After Shooting

Students in PoK have launched a major protest against increased fees, result disputes, and lack of facilities. The movement, which began at Muzaffarabad University, turned violent after a shooting incident. Students damaged government property and chanted slogans against the government.

POK: In recent days, the anger of the youth in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has become evident on the streets. Particularly, Gen Z, or the new generation of students and young people, are now openly raising their voices against the policies of Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif government and the army. The protest began at Muzaffarabad University, but this movement now appears to be spreading across the entire region. The youth allege that the government has neglected education, development, and everyday necessities, and the economic burden on the public is continuously increasing.

Student Movement Intensifies in PoK

This protest initially began as a peaceful demonstration. Students stood up against increased university fees, and the lack of hostel and basic facilities. Students stated that they are already facing an economic crisis and the government is burdening them rather than improving educational institutions. Students added that the government is ignoring the youth of PoK, while millions are spent on leaders.

Discontent Over Fees and Facilities

Many students studying at Muzaffarabad University reported a significant increase in fees compared to last year. Furthermore, basic facilities such as labs, internet, hostels, transport, and libraries are in extremely poor condition. According to students, instead of improving the study environment, the administration is even cutting back on low-cost facilities, which has angered the students.

Protests Erupt After Shooting Incident

Initially, the protest was peaceful, but as soon as unidentified individuals opened fire, the situation deteriorated. It is reported that one student was injured in the shooting. Following this, anger erupted among the students. They burned tires, damaged buildings, and set fires in various places. This protest is no longer limited to the university but has spread as a widespread movement against the government.

Protest Spreads on Social Media

Videos of this movement are rapidly going viral on social media platforms X (Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook. It is clear from the videos that the youth are not only standing against the fees but also against the interference of the Pakistani government and army. Many posts also claim that this movement is no longer just an educational campaign but is taking on the tone of a demand for freedom.
