Tensions have escalated in Turkiye ahead of peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan, following a statement by Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif regarding military action. The successful outcome of the talks is now considered uncertain amidst border violence and accusations of terrorism.
Pakistan: Peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan are set to begin in Istanbul, the capital of Turkiye. However, just before these talks, Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif issued a statement that has heightened tensions. Khawaja Asif warned the Taliban government that if Afghanistan does not take action against terrorist groups present on its soil, Pakistan would consider taking military steps itself. This statement, made just hours before the talks, has impacted the atmosphere for discussions.
Khawaja Asif's Statement
During a TV interview, Khawaja Asif was asked if military action was the only option to deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan. In response, he stated, "There will be war." This was a direct warning. Asif accused Afghanistan of harboring terrorists and disregarding cross-border attacks. According to him, Pakistan might have to take b measures to protect its security (National Security).
Background of Border Violence
In recent months, several attacks and clashes have occurred along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistan claims that members of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are entering from Afghanistan and carrying out attacks. Pakistan accuses the Taliban government of failing to act against these groups. This situation has become a security challenge for Pakistan.

Afghanistan's Response
Afghanistan refuted Pakistan's allegations, with Kabul stating that Pakistan is conducting drone strikes along the border, resulting in civilian casualties. Afghanistan described Pakistan's policy as contradictory, asserting that Pakistan is blaming Kabul for its own problems. The Afghan government also added that Pakistan is ignoring a larger issue by not acting against elements associated with ISIS.
Role of the Talks
Turkiye and Qatar are mediating this peace meeting. The objective of the meeting is to reduce border conflicts, accusations of terrorism, and diplomatic tensions. The talks were expected to provide a stable direction for relations between the two countries. However, Khawaja Asif's statement has rendered the outcome of the meeting uncertain.
Regional Situation
Afghanistan and Pakistan are both located in a region where political instability impacts neighboring countries. The balance of power in the region has shifted since the formation of the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Pakistan initially maintained close ties with the Taliban, but now trust between the two countries appears to be diminishing. This situation is a cause for concern for security stability in South Asia.
