Beijing: Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a bilateral meeting in China's capital, Beijing, on Wednesday. This meeting took place during a massive military parade organized on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Japan's formal surrender in World War II. On this occasion, both leaders spent time together publicly for the first time since the Cold War.

During the bilateral talks, Kim Jong Un assured Putin that North Korea would support Russia in every possible way. Kim said, "If there is anything I can do or should do for you and the Russian people, I consider it my duty out of brotherhood."
Putin was very pleased with Kim's assurance and addressed him in Russian as 'Dear Chairman of State Affairs'. Putin extended his warm wishes to Kim, and both leaders emphasized strengthening cooperation between their countries.
Defense Treaty and Cooperation in Ukraine
A defense treaty was signed between Russia and North Korea in 2024. Under this treaty, North Korean soldiers are fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine. Putin praised this treaty, stating that the relations between the two countries remain special, trustworthy, and cooperative. He also praised the bravery of the North Korean soldiers.
Putin mentioned that earlier this year, North Korean soldiers made a significant contribution in expelling Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region in western Russia. He said, "We will never forget the sacrifices of your soldiers and their families."
Military Parade and Summit in China
Prior to this meeting, Putin and Kim participated in the military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, along with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This parade is considered to be China's largest military parade to date. The presence of all three leaders at this parade drew significant international political attention.
