Rahul Gandhi Accused of Perjury in Savarkar Defamation Case. Satyaki Savarkar has filed an application in court seeking legal action against him.
Savarkar Defamation Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is once again embroiled in a legal dispute. He has been accused of giving false testimony in the Vinayak Damodar Savarkar defamation case. This allegation has been made by Savarkar's grandson, Satyaki Savarkar, who has filed an application in court demanding that Rahul Gandhi be prosecuted for lying under oath.
How the Matter Began
This controversy stems from a speech given by Rahul Gandhi in London in March 2023. In that speech, Rahul Gandhi allegedly claimed that Savarkar had written in one of his books that he and some of his associates had beaten up a Muslim man and that this gave him pleasure. Satyaki Savarkar says that this claim is completely false and that no such incident occurred, nor did Savarkar ever write about it.
Satyaki Savarkar's Complaint
Satyaki Savarkar has already filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi. He alleges that Gandhi's remarks are damaging to Savarkar's image and factually incorrect. Now, he has filed a new application alleging that Rahul Gandhi lied in court by claiming that he had not received the defamatory video, while his lawyer had already acknowledged receiving it.
Dispute Over Video Clip
According to Satyaki Savarkar's lawyer, Sangram Kolhatkar, the speech containing the controversial remarks about Savarkar was present in the documents and CDs presented to the court by the complainant. Kolhatkar said that Rahul Gandhi's lawyer had acknowledged receiving these documents, but despite this, Rahul Gandhi claimed in his application that he did not receive this material.
Details of the Application Filed in Court
The application states that Rahul Gandhi's claim is "false and misleading" and is intended to avoid the charges. It also states that the accused video and speech are the main basis of the complaint, and refusing to acknowledge their receipt is an attempt to mislead the court.
Hearing in Special Court
This case is being heard in a special court that hears cases involving MPs and MLAs. Based on the application filed in court, it will now be seen whether a separate case will be pursued against Rahul Gandhi for giving false testimony.
Savarkar Family's Displeasure
The Savarkar family has objected to Rahul Gandhi's statements in the past as well. Satyaki Savarkar says that they are committed to taking legal recourse to protect his grandfather's legacy and honor. He also said that misrepresenting historical facts is not only personal defamation but also tampering with the country's history.
