Sudden Deterioration After Arrest
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was taken into custody on Friday night on charges of misusing government funds. He was accused of misusing the state treasury during foreign travels. His health deteriorated within hours of the arrest.
Deputy Director-General of Colombo National Hospital, Rukshan Bellana, stated that the former president was suffering from severe dehydration. Due to being a patient of diabetes and high blood pressure, he has been kept under observation in the ICU. His condition is currently stable, but a team of doctors is constantly monitoring his health.
Sent to Hospital Due to Inadequate Medical Facilities in Jail
Ranil Wickremesinghe was initially held in Colombo's New Magazine Prison. However, his condition worsened due to inadequate medical facilities in the prison. The prison administration immediately decided to transfer him to the hospital. A prison spokesperson said that as soon as his condition deteriorated, a medical team was immediately called, and he was then admitted to the ICU.
Opposition Alleges Part of a Political Conspiracy
This case has caused a stir in Sri Lankan politics. Opposition parties allege that the current government is taking such actions to weaken political rivals.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party MP Nalin Bandara said that the government is afraid that Ranil Wickremesinghe may return to power. Therefore, he is being put under mental pressure by being imprisoned.

After the former president's arrest, opposition leaders met with him in jail. They said that Ranil Wickremesinghe will face this trial firmly and bring the truth before the public.
