Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's husband, Safdar Awan, made a controversial statement at a rally, where he expressed support for Mumtaz Qadri and targeted the Ahmadiyya community. Following the appearance of his speech on social media, opposition parties and human rights organizations have sharply criticized it.
Pakistan: In Pakistan's Punjab province, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's government recently banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). Amidst this decision, the statement of Maryam Nawaz's husband, Captain (retired) Safdar Awan, is now under scrutiny. Safdar Awan delivered a hate speech against the minority Ahmadiyya community during a rally, which is drawing b criticism at political and social levels in Pakistan. This statement was made during a gathering held in Chiniot district, approximately 170 kilometers from Lahore.
Radical Statements in Speech
Addressing the rally, Safdar Awan stated that he wished for every household in Pakistan to produce an individual like Mumtaz Qadri. Mumtaz Qadri is the person who assassinated the then-Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, in 2011. Qadri's argument was that Taseer had criticized blasphemy laws and supported Asia Bibi, a Christian woman imprisoned on blasphemy charges. Qadri was later executed in 2016 by court order. Some extremist groups still consider Qadri a symbol of support and respect today.
Allegations Against the Ahmadiyya Community

In his speech, Safdar Awan also targeted the Ahmadiyya community. He claimed that he feared the Ahmadiyya community might try to create a separate state, similar to Israel, by purchasing land in Chenab Nagar. In his address, he stated that individuals like Mumtaz Qadri are necessary to protect the concept of 'Khatam-e-Nabuwwat'. 'Khatam-e-Nabuwwat' is the Islamic belief principle which states that Prophet Muhammad is the final prophet and no prophet will come after him.
Strong Reactions on Social Media
After Safdar's speech video surfaced on social media, it garnered b reactions. Many citizens, journalists, and human rights activists described the statement as promoting violence and religious hatred. People also pointed out that while the Punjab government has tried to curb extremism by banning the TLP, such a statement from the Chief Minister's husband on a public platform raises serious questions.
Increased Pressure on Maryam Nawaz
Opponents and several social organizations have demanded action from Maryam Nawaz, seeking a clear stance on her husband's statement. This matter is also significant because Maryam Nawaz currently plays an active leadership role in Pakistan's national politics, and she is known for her image as a liberal, pro-democracy leader. In this context, her husband's statement is considered contrary to that image.
The Punjab government had recommended banning the TLP last month. This decision was made when more than 16 people died and over 1600 were injured in clashes between police and TLP supporters. The TLP has long been known for its aggressive stance on blasphemy laws and issues of religious identity.
