Elon Musk's satellite internet company, Starlink, is preparing for a full-scale launch in India. The company will establish gateway stations in 9 major cities across the country. During the trial, 100 user terminals will be utilized, and all data will remain secure within India. As per security regulations, only Indian citizens will be permitted to operate these stations.
Satellite Internet: Elon Musk's Starlink is now ready for its full-scale launch in India. The company will establish gateway earth stations in 9 cities across the country and will trial its Gen 1 satellite constellation for a capacity of 600 gigabits per second. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted provisional spectrum for 100 user terminals. For security reasons, only Indian citizens will be able to operate these stations, and all data will be securely stored within India. The company will be required to send reports to the DoT and security agencies every 15 days.
600 Gigabits Per Second Capacity
According to a report by The Economic Times, Starlink has applied for a speed capacity of 600 gigabits per second under its Gen 1 satellite constellation in India. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has currently granted the company provisional spectrum for a demo, to verify security standards. Under this permit, Starlink can import 100 user terminals and is only allowed to conduct demonstrations of fixed satellite services.
The objective of Starlink's trial is to test the potential of high-speed internet in India. Through this, the company can also assess the demand for this technology in the Indian market and identify which cities have the greatest need for the service.
Strict Security Regulations and Monitoring
The government has imposed strict security regulations on Starlink to prevent any misuse. The company had proposed bringing foreign technical experts for its station operations, but the government clarified that until security clearance is received from the Ministry of Home Affairs, only Indian citizens can operate these stations.
Under the surveillance of security agencies, reports on the status and operations of every Starlink station will be regularly sent to the government. This will ensure that no sensitive data or technology falls into the wrong hands.
Previous Security Concerns
Security concerns regarding Starlink's activities had been raised previously in India. In March 2025, illegal Starlink equipment was seized in Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Following this, the Ministry of Home Affairs instructed the Department of Telecommunications to investigate such activities. Subsequently, data localization and regular reporting were made mandatory.
This government policy ensures that Starlink's data and satellite network operate within India's security standards. This will allow any potential threat to be averted in a timely manner.

During the trial, Starlink will not provide its services to the general public. Any data generated during this period will be securely stored within India. The company will be required to send reports to the Department of Telecommunications and security agencies every 15 days. These reports will include information on the location of their stations, which terminals are being used, and the users' locations.
The objective of this regulation is to ensure internet and data security in the country. This move by Starlink also makes it clear that no foreign technology can operate in India without supervision.
Starlink's Significance in India
Starlink could prove very useful in areas of India where mobile networks or fiber optic internet have not yet reached. The company's high-speed satellite service can expand internet access in rural areas, mountainous regions, and remote areas. This will also help reduce the digital divide in the country.
Through Starlink's plan, new possibilities for internet connectivity will open up in India. Whether it is education, business, or healthcare, the presence of high-speed internet will facilitate the expansion of digital services.
