Search for missing girls from the summer camp continues
Several teenage girls were present at a summer camp located on the banks of the Guadalupe River. When the sudden flood hit, there was concern that many of the girls had been swept away. According to local authorities, more than 20 girls are still unaccounted for. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, and relief teams are constantly working to safely extract the missing people.
Flooding came without prior warning
Dalton Rice, the City Manager of Kerrville, the capital of Kerr County, told the media that the flood came very quickly, and there was no prior warning. He said, "This event happened so fast that it could not be predicted even on weather radar. The water level rose to a dangerous level in less than two hours."
The death toll is likely to rise
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said that 13 people have died so far, but the number could increase considering the situation. He said that relief and rescue operations are still ongoing, and there is a possibility of finding more bodies in the coming time.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's warning
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick informed that 10 bodies, including children, have been recovered so far. Some of these bodies were found inside vehicles that had been swept away. He said that rescue teams are still searching for 23 girls missing from the summer camp. Patrick appealed to people to pray for the safe return of the missing.
Rescue operations using helicopters and drones
Considering the serious situation, helicopters and drones are being used in the relief efforts. Lieutenant Governor Patrick said that 14 helicopters and several drones are continuously conducting search operations in the area. He also mentioned that the flood was so rapid that the water level of the Guadalupe River rose by 26 feet in just 45 minutes.
The risk of heavy rainfall still persists
The administration has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and flooding for the next 24 to 48 hours in areas from San Antonio to Waco. People have been urged to stay in safe places and avoid unnecessary travel. According to the weather department, there is a possibility of more rain in the region, which could further hinder relief operations.
Emergency services have been activated in Kerr County and surrounding areas. Relief camps are being set up, and affected people are being moved to safe locations. The Texas National Guard has also been deployed in the relief efforts.
