Barwani: A tragic accident occurred during the Ganesh festival in the Palsud police station area of Barwani district, Madhya Pradesh. 14-year-old Dil Singh and 18-year-old Rahul, who had gone to watch the tableaux, were swept away in a swollen culvert, resulting in their deaths. This incident took place amidst heavy rainfall and flood-like conditions in the area, which has shaken the local residents.
The two youths had set out from Sidri to Palsud on their motorcycle. When they did not return all night, anxiety spread among their families. Relatives and villagers began searching for them. With the help of the administration and local people, their bodies were recovered the next day, about 2 kilometers away from the culvert.
Two Youths Die in Fast Current at Eklara Culvert
Palsud Station House Officer Sukh Lal Bhanwar stated that the water current was flowing very rapidly at the Eklara culvert due to heavy rain. The two youths were attempting to cross the culvert when the water swept them away. Their motorcycle was also found near the culvert, making it clear that they were going to see the tableaux.
At the time of the accident, the water level in the area was high, and the situation deteriorated rapidly. Local residents say that crossing the culvert was already dangerous, but people were not cautious amidst the festive fervor. The administration has stated that warning signs need to be installed at culverts to prevent such accidents.
Flood-Like Conditions in Barwani District
In the Barwani district, the Rupa river suddenly swelled recently due to heavy rainfall. This led to the closure of several roads and caused damage to shops and vehicles. A flood situation also arose in the Gomukh river in the neighboring Khargone district, affecting traffic and lives.
The administration has been working to move people to safe locations in such areas from time to time. Local residents report that the water levels in rivers and drains have risen significantly during this monsoon season, posing a danger to culverts and those living in low-lying areas.
Several Deaths Due to Floods and Lightning
This monsoon season, over a dozen people have died in the Barwani and Khargone districts due to drowning and lightning strikes. Barwani district has received a total of 26.5 inches of rain this monsoon season, while 28.7 inches were recorded during the same period last year. The average rainfall for the district is 29.38 inches.
Khargone district has received 25.6 inches of rain this monsoon season, while 31.5 inches of rain were recorded by the same time last year. The district's average rainfall is 33 inches. Experts advise that people should exercise extreme caution in situations of continuous rain and rising water levels. The administration has warned people not to go near swollen rivers and culverts and to remain in safe locations.
