US Supreme Court Invalidates Trump Emergency Tariffs; President Says India-US Trade Deal Unchanged

The United States Supreme Court has ruled President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs unlawful. President Trump said the decision will not affect the existing India-United States trade agreement and reiterated that India will continue to pay tariffs under the current arrangement.

The United States Supreme Court has declared unlawful the broad emergency tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Following the ruling, President Trump stated that there would be no change to the India-United States trade agreement despite the Court’s decision.

Speaking after the judgment, President Trump reiterated that India would continue to pay tariffs under the existing trade arrangement. He said the recent decision by the Supreme Court invalidated the emergency-wide tariffs imposed by him, but maintained that the India-United States trade agreement would remain unchanged and that India would continue tariff payments as before.

During a press conference, President Trump said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great person, but he was very smart against the United States. India was in a position to take advantage of us for a long time. Now we have made a fair and balanced agreement. There will be no change in the India-United States trade deal, and India will have to pay tariffs."

President Trump stated that his relations with India are good and that trade cooperation between the two countries is b. He said India had been receiving oil from Russia but that, following his intervention and request, India had largely stopped purchasing oil from Russia. He said this step was necessary to prevent a global war and ensure security.

He further reiterated that tariffs were used to prevent a potential war between India and Pakistan. He said, "Last summer, by using tariffs, I stopped a war between India and Pakistan. At that time, 10 planes were shot down, and the situation could perhaps have turned into a nuclear war."

President Trump said he warned both countries, "If you want to fight, it will affect trade with the United States and you will have to pay 200 percent tariffs." He stated that after this warning both countries immediately established peace. He also said that the Prime Minister of Pakistan appreciated his step and acknowledged that it saved millions of lives.

The United States Supreme Court’s decision declaring the emergency tariffs unlawful had led to expectations of a shift in United States trade policy. President Trump rejected that suggestion, stating that the Court’s ruling would have no impact on the India-United States trade agreement. He said the agreement would continue as before, that India would have to pay tariffs, and that the United States would not pay any tariffs.
