Air India Clarifies Ahmedabad Flight Crash Compensation Process Amidst Concerns

Amidst questions raised about the compensation process following the Ahmedabad flight crash, Air India has issued a clarification. The company stated that the questionnaire was solely for familial verification. Payments have been made to 47 families.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Following the Air India flight AI-171 accident in Ahmedabad, questions are being raised about the process of compensating the affected families. UK-based legal firm Stewarts LLP, which represents more than 40 affected families, alleges that the airline pressured families to share financial details by providing complex forms filled with legal jargon.

What the legal firm said

Peter Neenan, a partner at Stewarts, leveled serious accusations against Air India, stating that the affected families were sent a questionnaire that used legal terminology. These forms were being filled without any legal advice. Neenan said, "Families were asked if they were financially dependent on the deceased. The answer to this question could affect the amount of compensation."

Air India's clarification

Air India has rejected these allegations outright, stating that the purpose of the questionnaire was only to confirm family relationships so that interim payments could reach the correct beneficiaries. The airline clarified that this is a standard administrative procedure and that every possible effort is being made to assist the families.

Claim of transparency in the process

Air India stated that the next of kin of the deceased were given the option of filling out the questionnaire via email or in person. No meetings will be held with any family without prior notice. Additionally, separate teams have been formed to assist the families with funeral arrangements, accommodation, and other facilities.

How many families have been paid so far

According to Air India, advance payments have been made to 47 families so far, and the payment process is underway for 55 other families. The airline states that this is a complex and sensitive process that is being carried out with utmost sensitivity.

Tata Group's announcement regarding compensation

Following this tragic accident, the Tata Group had announced that each of the deceased's families would be given financial assistance of one crore rupees. Along with this, the company also mentioned the establishment of a trust of 500 crore rupees, under which services like education, health, and rehabilitation would be provided to the affected families.

How many people died in the accident
