Chandigarh’s final electoral roll will be released on September 22 following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). A total of 5,16,427 registered voters were covered during the revision, while 4,50,246 Enumeration Forms were received and digitised. The final number of voters will become clear after the publication of the revised electoral roll.
The Special Intensive Revision process in Chandigarh included verification of voters’ details. With the publication of the final electoral roll, the number of names retained, deleted and newly added will become clear.
At the beginning of the SIR process, 5,16,427 registered voters in Chandigarh were covered. Of these, 4,50,246 Enumeration Forms were received and digitised, while 66,146 forms could not be received despite several attempts. In addition, further verification was undertaken in cases involving about 69,451 voters due to mapping-related information or other discrepancies.
According to available figures after the SIR, the number of voters in Chandigarh is being reported at around 4.60 lakh. Compared with the 5,16,427 voters recorded before the revision, this indicates a reduction of more than 56,000 voters. However, this cannot be treated as the final figure before the final electoral roll is published.
During the SIR, voters’ names and details were verified. The process also examined cases involving absent, shifted, deceased or duplicate voters. The Election Department completed the verification and claims-and-objections process in such cases.
The actual reduction in the number of voters and the reasons for names being deleted or details being modified will become clear only after the final electoral roll is released.
The publication of the final electoral roll will also show changes in the number of voters across individual wards. The list is significant in the context of the proposed Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. Changes in voter numbers across different wards will also affect local election data.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office had shared information related to verification during the SIR process. The overall outcome of the revision can now be assessed after details of voters included in the final electoral roll become available.
Voters will need to check their names and details in the final electoral roll. If an eligible voter’s name is missing or any detail is incorrect, an application for correction or inclusion can be made under the procedure prescribed by the Election Commission.
