Himachal Floods: This year's monsoon has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Since the monsoon's arrival in the state on June 20th, 43 people have lost their lives, and 37 are missing. The most significant damage has occurred in the Mandi district, where a total of 10 incidents of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides were recorded on Tuesday. In Mandi, 17 deaths have been reported, and 31 people are missing. This weather-related devastation has not only disrupted public life but has also heated up the politics of the state.
Kangana Ranaut's Mandi Visit Cancelled, Provides Explanation
Political debate has begun regarding Kangana Ranaut, BJP MP from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat, and actress. Questions were raised about Kangana not visiting her constituency after the heavy rains and disaster. Kangana has given her explanation on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Kangana wrote, "It is heartbreaking to witness the devastation caused by floods in Himachal Pradesh almost every year. I tried to reach Seraj and other flood-affected areas of Mandi, but the Leader of the Opposition, Jairam Thakur, advised me that it would be better to wait until contact and access to the affected areas are restored."
She further wrote, "The DC of Mandi has again issued a red alert today. I am waiting for the administration's permission and as soon as I get permission, I will try to reach there as soon as possible."
Jairam Thakur's Response: No Comment on Those Without Concern
Former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Jairam Thakur, responded sharply to Kangana's statement. He said, "I don't want to say much about this. We are here to live and die with our people. We are concerned. I don't want to comment on those who are not concerned."
Political Activity Intensifies, Questions Among the Public
This is Kangana Ranaut's first monsoon session since becoming an MP, and also the first major disaster in her constituency. Discussions have begun among the public as to why their elected representative is not present during this time of crisis. People are also raising questions on social media, asking whether it is right to wait for administrative permission or whether it was necessary to visit the site and assess the situation as a public representative.
Administrative Situation and Alert
Due to the continuous rainfall in the Mandi district, the district administration issued a red alert again on Tuesday. There are reports of landslides on roads, waterlogging in villages, and disruption of communication systems in many places. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, but considering the severity of the weather, the administration has advised people to stay indoors.
