India Weather Update: Fog, Rain, and Snow Disrupt Normal Life

The weather across the country has been quite varied this time around. Dense fog in North India has increased travel difficulties, while snowfall in the hill states has disrupted normal life.

Weather Update: The weather patterns across the country are changing. A warning has been issued for moderate to heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on December 17th. Additionally, dense fog will persist in many cities in North India, potentially impacting traffic and daily life. The pollution level in the capital, Delhi, will remain elevated, while Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will experience more intense cold. Light snowfall is expected in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Rainfall Expected in 5 States

According to the Meteorological Department, a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall is in effect for the following states on December 17th:

  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Puducherry
  • Kerala
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Fishermen are advised to remain vigilant during this period. There is a possibility of thunderstorms with lightning in several locations. Strong winds of 30-40 kilometers per hour are expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands late on December 17th and on December 18th.

Dense Fog Alert for 18 Cities

The impact of fog will continue to be significant in North India. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for dense fog in 18 cities. The list of major cities is as follows:

  • Bihar: Patna, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Gaya, Jahanabad, Darbhanga
  • Uttar Pradesh: Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Etawah, Barabanki, Saharanpur
  • Himachal Pradesh: Shimla, Manali
  • Haryana: Gurugram

Visibility is likely to be reduced in these cities during the morning hours, potentially affecting road traffic.

Delhi Weather

The pollution level in Delhi will remain elevated on December 17th. According to the Meteorological Department:

  • Maximum Temperature: 25 degrees Celsius
  • Minimum Temperature: 8 degrees Celsius
  • Winds will be blowing at a speed of 10-15 km/h in the morning.

Caution is advised as the risk of accidents on the roads may increase due to fog.

Cold and Fog in Uttar Pradesh-Bihar

In UP, the minimum temperature in several cities may drop to 6-7 degrees Celsius on December 17th. Affected cities include: Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Unnao, Tundla, Aligarh, Bareilly, Barabanki, Muzaffarnagar. Children and the elderly should take extra precautions during this weather. A dense fog warning has been issued for Patna, Gaya, East Champaran, West Champaran, Buxar, Bhojpur, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj in Bihar.
A cold wave is likely to intensify in Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Gopalganj.

Snowfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh

Light rain and snowfall are expected in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. Moderate to dense fog is expected to persist in the plains. Temperatures may drop by 3-4 degrees in the next few days. Light snowfall is expected in the upper reaches of Kinnaur, Kangra, and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh on December 20th and 21st.
Tourists are enjoying the snowfall in the Shinkula Pass in Lahaul Spiti. The minimum temperature will remain normal in most parts of Rajasthan. Light to moderate fog may persist in the eastern and western districts.
