Sawan Putrada Ekadashi 2025: Date, Significance, Puja Vidhi, and Rituals

The month of Sawan is filled with devotion and faith towards Lord Shiva. This month is brimming with religious activities, and a series of fasts, worship of Shiva, and special festivals take place during this time. One such special day is called Putrada Ekadashi, which is observed specifically for the blessing of progeny and the well-being of children.

It is believed that by observing this fast, couples are blessed with the joy of having children, and those who are already parents are blessed with the good health and longevity of their children. In 2025, the Putrada Ekadashi fast of the Sawan month will be observed on August 5th. This day is considered very special for devotees of Shiva and worshipers of Vishnu because on this day, the grace of both Lord Vishnu and Shiva is received simultaneously.

When is Sawan Putrada Ekadashi 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang, Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Sawan month. In the year 2025, this tithi will begin on August 4th at 11:41 AM and end on August 5th at 1:12 PM. Since the Ekadashi fast is observed according to the Udaya Tithi (the time of sunrise), the Putrada Ekadashi fast will be observed on August 5th.

Devotees observing the fast will break the fast (Parana) on August 6th. The Parana time will be from 5:45 AM to 8:26 AM. The fast will be broken at this time after following the rules of the fast.

Puja Vidhi and Rules

On the day of Putrada Ekadashi, devotees wake up during the Brahma Muhurta and, after bathing, take a vow to observe the fast. After this, they wear clean yellow or red clothes and clean the place of worship in their homes. After offering Arghya to the Sun, the preparations for the puja begin.

For the puja, a yellow cloth is spread on a wooden platform, and an idol or picture of Lakshmi Narayan is placed on it. After this, the idol is bathed with Panchamrit, and then yellow flowers, sandalwood, Tulsi leaves, incense, lamps, and Naivedya are offered to the Lord.

According to scriptures, offering श्रृंगार materials to Goddess Lakshmi on this day is considered very auspicious. The devotees light a ghee lamp and perform the aarti of Lord Vishnu, and then the story of Putrada Ekadashi is heard or recited.

Throughout the day, while following the rules of the fast, the name of the Lord is remembered. Most devotees observe a Nirjala Vrat (without water), but if it is not possible due to health reasons, the fast can also be observed with fruits or water.

Mythological Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

This Ekadashi is given special importance in religious texts. According to one story, King Mahijit of the city of Bhadravati did not have children for a long time. He asked the sage Lomesh for a solution, and the sage told him that he had committed some sins in his previous life, and to get rid of them, he should observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast.

The King and Queen, following the advice of the sage, observed the Putrada Ekadashi fast with due diligence, and after some time, they were blessed with a son. Since then, it has become a belief that this fast is extremely effective for the joy of having children and their well-being.

A Special Fast for the Blessing of Progeny

Putrada Ekadashi is considered special for those couples who are seeking the blessing of progeny. Especially, this Ekadashi falling in the month of Sawan is considered more auspicious because the grace of Lord Shiva also remains upon the devotees during Sawan.

On this day, mothers observe the fast for the good health, wisdom, and fortune of their children. They also pray that their children may progress in life and achieve prestige in society.

The Combined Grace of Lord Vishnu and Shiva

This fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but because it falls in the month of Sawan, the grace of Lord Shiva is also included. This is the reason why the Putrada Ekadashi fast of Sawan is considered twice as fruitful. The observer receives the blessings of both Vishnu and Shiva, which brings balance, prosperity, and peace into their lives.

Special Enthusiasm Seen Among Devotees

This time, special enthusiasm is being seen among the devotees regarding the Putrada Ekadashi of Sawan. Preparations for special events are underway at religious places. The framework for stories, aartis, and bhajan evenings has been prepared in the temples. Awareness campaigns are being run regarding this Ekadashi, from social media to TV channels. Especially in those areas where a special desire for the blessing of progeny is sought, faith and belief in this fast is seen even more.
