Two intern students at a government medical college in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, were assaulted. The alleged reason was the students' sharing of jokes on Instagram, which angered their batchmates and seniors.

Gandhinagar: In Bhavnagar, Gujarat, two intern students at a government medical college faced severe consequences for sharing jokes on social media. Their seniors and batchmates reportedly held them captive and brutally assaulted them. A police complaint has been filed, and the college administration, deeming the incident as ragging, has immediately expelled the four accused students.

The victims stated that some batchmates and a senior allegedly detained and assaulted them over jokes shared on Instagram.

How did the conflict arise?

According to the victims, Ishan Kotak and Aman Joshi, the incident stemmed from resentment over college sporting events and social media posts among some batchmates and a senior student. Aman Joshi reported that late at night, four batchmates and a senior entered his hostel room, forcibly took him to another room, slapped him, verbally abused him, and issued threats.

Similarly, Ishan Kotak's complaint stated that he was called out of his hostel, forcibly put into a vehicle, and assaulted during a drive around the city.

College Administration and Police Action

Upon receiving the complaint, the college administration, considering it an act of ragging, immediately suspended four students and decided to seize their certificates. Dr. Sushil Jha, Dean of the medical college, stated that an 11-member anti-ragging committee investigated the matter and took swift action. The police have filed a case against the accused students under various sections, including wrongful confinement, intentional injury, breach of peace, and using abusive language in public. However, no arrests have been made yet.

This incident highlights not only the anger stemming from social media posts but also the escalating trend of ragging in colleges. Experts say that despite strict laws and vigilance from college administrations, such incidents continue unabated.
