Mothabari Communal Violence: Following communal violence in the Mothabari area of Malda district, West Bengal, the administration has tightened security. Internet services remain suspended, and a large number of police personnel have been deployed. Following incidents of vandalism, looting, and violence targeting Hindu homes, shops, and vehicles on March 27th, police have arrested 34 rioters.

High Court Demands Report

The Calcutta High Court has directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to submit a detailed report on the violence by April 3rd. The court cautioned the state administration to act with caution, given the sensitivity of the matter, and to ensure the safety of those affected by the violence.

Response from Local MLA and Administration

Minister and local TMC MLA Sabina Yasmin described the situation as under control. She stated, “We have held peace meetings with various communities and groups, and the meetings have been quite positive. We hope the situation will return to normal soon.” The administration also clarified that Section 144 was not imposed in view of the upcoming Ram Navami and Eid, but strict action will be taken if crowds gather.

Increased Security, Heightened Police Vigilance

Three companies of the State Armed Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) are continuously patrolling sensitive areas in the Kaliachak block. Inspector General of Police Rajesh Yadav stated that police forces are monitoring the entire area, including markets, and strict action is being taken against the rioters.

Police Message on Social Media

Malda Police posted on the social media platform ‘X’ that raids and arrests are being conducted against those spreading chaos. Additionally, police pickets have been established in sensitive areas, and mobile units are on high alert to maintain law and order.

24-Hour Police Patrol

According to the district police, 24-hour patrols are underway throughout the area, with immediate action taken on any suspicious activity. Six cases related to this violence have been registered so far, and a total of 34 people have been arrested. The administration claims that the situation is under control and strict police surveillance continues.

Statements from Locals

According to local residents, the situation deteriorated on Wednesday evening after a religious procession passed near a place of worship. Following this, rioters engaged in arson, vandalism, and attacks on individuals. Several shops and vehicles were also damaged.

Recent Communal Violence in Nagpur

It is noteworthy that large-scale communal violence occurred in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on March 17th. Following rumors of alleged desecration of a religious book, incidents of stone-pelting and arson took place in several parts of the city. Police arrested more than 110 people in connection with this violence, including the main accused, Fahim Khan.
