Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation to the SGPC executive committee.

Amritsar: Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has resigned from his post, submitting his resignation to the SGPC executive committee. Dhami cited Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Akal Takht's remarks on the allegedly improper removal of Giani Harpreet Singh as the reason for his resignation. In a press conference, Dhami stated that he tendered his resignation out of respect for the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Reason for Resignation?

Harjinder Singh Dhami stated that while the SGPC ethically has the right to investigate matters concerning the Singh Sahiban, Giani Raghbir Singh objected, asserting that the SGPC lacks the authority to convene meetings of the Singh Sahiban. He cited this as the ethical reason for his resignation, submitting his resignation to the SGPC executive committee.

Harjinder Singh Dhami's Tenure as SGPC President?

Harjinder Singh Dhami had been serving as the SGPC president since November 29, 2021. He had won the annual November elections three times consecutively, making it his fourth term. The SGPC executive committee will now decide whether to accept or reject his resignation.

Dhami announced his resignation before reporters but refused further comment and left immediately. It is noteworthy that a few days prior, the SGPC removed Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo (Bathinda), a decision criticized by Giani Raghbir Singh of Akal Takht.
