Earthquake: A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread devastation. The disaster has claimed the lives of over 140 people and injured hundreds more. The epicenter was near Mandalay, resulting in tremors felt across Myanmar, Thailand, and China.
Bangkok Building Collapse Kills Six
In Bangkok, Thailand, the earthquake caused a 33-story building under construction to collapse. Six people died in the incident, and several others were injured. Rescue and recovery efforts are underway to remove those trapped under the debris.
Aftershocks Exacerbate Situation
Several aftershocks followed the initial quake, one registering 6.4 in magnitude. This has created a climate of fear in Myanmar, with people fleeing to safer locations. The government has confirmed 144 deaths and 730 injuries to date.
Relief Efforts and International Assistance
The Myanmar government has appealed for blood donations and is accepting international aid. China and Russia have dispatched rescue teams, while the United Nations has allocated $5 million for emergency relief efforts.
Tremors Felt in China and Afghanistan
Tremors from the earthquake were also felt in the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China, causing damage to several buildings. Separately, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Saturday morning, although no significant damage has been reported.
India Sends Relief Supplies
India has sent 15 tons of relief supplies to aid Myanmar. An Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft departed from Hindon Airbase carrying essential medicines, food, and relief materials.
