Widespread Destruction from Earthquake; Several Cities Affected. Up to 70% GDP Loss Possible. India and Other Nations Launch Relief Efforts. State of Emergency Declared in Myanmar; Rescue Operations Ongoing. Tremors Felt in Thailand and India.
Myanmar Earthquake: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, devastating the country. Official reports indicate over 1000 deaths and more than 2200 serious injuries. Rescue operations are underway, but several agencies believe the death toll could exceed 10,000. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the number may rise further.
Tremors Felt in Thailand and India
The earthquake's tremors were felt in neighboring countries. Shaking was recorded from Bangkok, Thailand to the northeastern Indian states of Manipur and Meghalaya. Six people died in Thailand due to the disaster, and over 100 are reported missing.
India Sends Relief Supplies
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern on the social media platform 'X', offering condolences to the people of Myanmar and Thailand. India launched "Operation Brahma" to provide assistance. Over 15 tons of relief materials were sent on Saturday. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that this aid has reached Yangon airport. The relief supplies include tents, blankets, food packets, medical kits, and generators.
Why Was the Earthquake So Devastating?
Myanmar's Sagaing Fault is already considered a seismically active zone. A 6.8 magnitude earthquake in 2012 resulted in 26 deaths. Roger Musson, a research fellow at the British Geological Survey, explained that Friday's earthquake was at a depth of 10 km, resulting in ber surface tremors. Weak infrastructure and a lack of safety measures contributed to the significant loss of life and property.
Up to 70% GDP Loss Possible
According to preliminary USGS reports, the earthquake could severely damage Myanmar's economy. Experts estimate a potential loss of up to 70% of the country's GDP. Significant infrastructure in Myanmar's Mandalay region has also suffered extensive damage.
Myanmar Receives International Aid
Following the earthquake, Myanmar has begun receiving international assistance. China, Russia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore have sent relief supplies and rescue teams. South Korea has announced $2 million in aid through international organizations. The United States has also pledged humanitarian assistance, despite strained relations with Myanmar's military government.
