In Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital, a clump of hair and a shoelace were successfully removed from the stomach of 7-year-old Shubham through surgery. The child's condition is now stable. He suffered from the rare Trichobezoar disease.
Ahmedabad: Doctors at Civil Hospital gave a new lease of life to 7-year-old Shubham by successfully removing a clump of hair and a shoelace from his stomach through surgery. Shubham, a resident of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, had been suffering from persistent stomach pain, vomiting, and weight loss for the past two months. After the surgery, the child's condition is reported to be completely stable, and he has been discharged from the hospital.
Child Admitted to Hospital After Stomach Pain and Vomiting
Shubham's parents had initially consulted a private hospital in Madhya Pradesh, but found no relief there. Subsequently, they admitted him to the government-run Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.
Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi stated that the child's condition was critical. Due to persistent complaints of stomach pain, vomiting, and loss of appetite, doctors immediately initiated investigations. He mentioned that initial symptoms often appear as common stomach pain or gas, which can delay accurate diagnosis.
Child Safe After Diagnosis and Laparotomy Surgery
Shubham underwent a CT scan and endoscopy at the hospital. Investigations revealed a clump of hair and a shoelace lodged in his stomach. Dr. Joshi, Head of the Pediatric Department at Civil Hospital, explained that the situation was complex, and a laparotomy surgery was performed to remove them.
On the 7th day after surgery, a dye test confirmed that no residue remained in the stomach. Dr. Joshi stated that timely and correct treatment can save a child's life and prevent such incidents in the future.
Shubham Received Psychiatric Consultation
The hospital also arranged for Shubham to meet with a psychiatrist. Dr. Joshi explained that children with Trichobezoar disease often swallow hair or small objects. Psychological counseling helps children overcome this habit and prevents similar incidents in the future.
The father stated that they would now exercise greater caution and monitor the child. Doctors emphasized that monitoring mental health and dietary habits plays a crucial role in combating this disease.
Trichobezoar Disease and Its Symptoms
Dr. Joshi explained that Shubham had a rare condition called ‘Trichobezoar,’ in which children swallow hair, which then intertwines in the stomach to form a mass. Its symptoms include stomach pain, bloating, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, and constipation.
Hospital officials stated that timely treatment and psychological counseling can safeguard both the quality of life and the health of such children. Shubham is now completely healthy and has been discharged.
