SPORTS NEWS: Indian Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Aman Sehrawat has admitted his mistake and requested the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to lift the one-year ban imposed on him. Sehrawat was banned for failing to compete in his designated weight category at the Zagreb World Championship.
Paris Olympics Bronze Medalist Wrestler
Sehrawat, who won a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024, was honored with a cash prize of INR 50 lakh by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). At a ceremony held on this occasion, he acknowledged that his failure to lose weight last month was his fault. Sehrawat stated, “This is my first mistake, and I will not repeat it. I will personally meet WFI President Sanjay Singh and request him to lift my suspension.”
Dispute with WFI
Aman Sehrawat was suspended for failing to cut weight before his match at the Zagreb World Championship. His weight was found to be 1.7 kg over the prescribed limit. The WFI had sought an explanation from Sehrawat on September 23. However, his response on September 29 was deemed unsatisfactory by the disciplinary committee. Consequently, a one-year ban was imposed, which is expected to affect Sehrawat's upcoming career.
Aman Sehrawat explained that he could not continue his efforts to lose weight on the final day due to a sudden onset of stomach pain. He stated, “I started reducing weight a week before the competition. On the last day, I still had 600-700 grams remaining. I was practicing, but the stomach pain intensified again at night, and I didn't get relief even after taking medicine.”
