India and Canada Trade: India and Canada have prepared an ambitious action plan to enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, and civil nuclear. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand arrived in India on Monday and held detailed discussions in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During the meeting, both countries emphasized strengthening economic, technological, and energy cooperation based on mutual trust and respect.

Meeting with Prime Minister Modi

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this meeting, both sides discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, energy, technology, and people-to-people ties. Prime Minister Modi referred to his visit to Canada during the G7 Summit and the discussions held there. He stated that several collaborative initiatives have been undertaken to strengthen trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi also stated that he looks forward to future meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Carney, which will enhance strategic cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stated

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said during the discussions that India and Canada have prepared an ambitious action plan to enhance cooperation in various sectors such as trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, and civil nuclear. He also informed that efforts are underway to restore and revitalize the necessary mechanisms to advance the partnership between the two countries.

Anita Anand's Remarks

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated in her initial address that India-Canada bilateral relations have seen continuous progress in recent months. She said, ‘We are taking all necessary steps to advance our partnership and are revitalizing the essential mechanisms to strengthen bilateral relations.’

Anita Anand also mentioned that the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has given a new direction to the relations between the two countries. She stated that India's approach is positive, and efforts to advance relations between the two nations will continue.

Past Dispute and Improvement in Relations

In 2023, relations between the two countries became strained after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This dispute led to a cooling of relations until April 2025. In April, parliamentary elections were held in Canada, and Mark Carney became Prime Minister following the Liberal Party's victory. Subsequently, India-Canada relations gradually began to return to normal.

During the G7 Summit last June, the discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Carney generated new vitality and a sense of trust in the relationship. Following this, both countries initiated several measures to enhance cooperation in various sectors.

Investment and Trade Cooperation

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that both countries discussed enhancing cooperation in the fields of energy, technology, and food security. He said that India is committed to strengthening investment and trade relations. After meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Goyal stated, ‘Our discussions focused on cooperation in the areas of energy, technology, and food security. India is eager to re-strengthen mutually beneficial trade and investment relations based on trust and respect.’
