Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha 2025: In Hinduism, Anant Chaturdashi is being celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2025. This day holds special significance for the worship of Lord Vishnu in His Anant form and for tying the Anant Sutra. According to the Puranic legend, Sage Kindinya insulted the Anant Sutra, which caused him great distress. After repenting and performing the Anant Vrat according to the prescribed rituals, he attained liberation and was blessed with wealth and grain. This is why reading the Vrat Katha and performing the puja is considered essential.
Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha
According to Puranic legend, in ancient times, there lived a Brahmin named Sumant. His wife was named Diksha, and they had a virtuous and beautiful daughter named Sushila. After Diksha's demise, Sumant remarried a woman named Karkasha. Sushila's marriage was arranged with Sage Kindinya. At the time of her departure, Karkasha gifted her son-in-law some bricks and stone fragments.
Sage Kindinya was returning to his ashram with his wife Sushila, but it got late on the way, and they stopped to perform evening rituals by the riverbank. Sushila observed many women dressed in beautiful attire worshipping a deity. When she inquired from these women, she learned about the significance of the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat and the Anant Sutra.
Sushila also observed the Vrat there and tied the fourteen-knotted Anant Sutra before going to Sage Kindinya.
Sage Kindinya's Anger and Repentance
Sage Kindinya asked Sushila about the Anant Sutra. Sushila explained the entire matter, but the sage became enraged and declared it all superstition. He forcibly removed the Anant Sutra from Sushila's hand and burned it in the fire. Due to this insult, Sage Kindinya became distressed, and his wealth was destroyed.
Sushila explained that all this had happened because of the insult to the Anant Sutra. Following this, Sage Kindinya began wandering in the forest in repentance. He searched for the Anant Sutra but could not find it. In despair, he collapsed on the ground. Just then, Lord Anant appeared and said that he had faced suffering because he had shown disrespect. The Lord, pleased with him, instructed him to perform the Anant Vrat with proper devotion.
Observance of Anant Chaturdashi Vrat
As per the Lord's command, Sage Kindinya observed the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat for fourteen years. This removed all his sorrows, and he was blessed with abundance of wealth and grain. Since then, this Vrat and the tradition of tying the Anant Sutra have continued.
On this day, devotees wake up early in the morning and maintain cleanliness. After bathing, they wear pure clothes and perform puja before an idol or image of Lord Vishnu. They tie the fourteen-knotted Anant Sutra and pray for the protection of their home, family, and wealth.
Conclusion of Ganesh Utsav
Anant Chaturdashi is also special because it marks the culmination of the ten-day-long Ganesh Utsav. Ganesh Visarjan (immersion of the idol) takes place on this day. Devotees bid farewell to Ganpati Bappa and observe the Anant Vrat on this day.
Observing the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha and puja leads to liberation from sins. Those who follow it experience happiness and prosperity in their lives. Tying the fourteen-knotted Anant Sutra bestows the grace of Lord Vishnu and provides freedom from hardships.
