Social media speculation surrounding Bollywood playback singer Arijit Singh intensified after reports claimed that he has announced his retirement from playback singing.
According to the information circulating, the announcement was made through Singh’s official Instagram account. In a statement shared on the occasion of the New Year, he expressed gratitude to his listeners and supporters for the love and encouragement he has received over the years. He stated that while he remains thankful for the journey, he will no longer accept new assignments as a playback singer.
Following the post, reactions quickly spread across social media platforms, with users expressing disbelief and emotional responses to the announcement. Many stated that it was difficult to imagine Hindi cinema without his voice, while others questioned the authenticity of the post and speculated whether the account had been compromised.

In his message, Singh described his career as a memorable and meaningful chapter of his life and said that he was choosing to bring this journey to a close with careful thought and personal satisfaction. He did not disclose any personal or professional reasons behind the decision.
The announcement has also been viewed in the context of what has been described as a growing trend of artists taking extended breaks or stepping away from active work. Singer Neha Kakkar has previously spoken about taking an indefinite break for personal reasons, while comedian Zakir Khan announced a prolonged hiatus from comedy due to health-related concerns.
Arijit Singh began his career in 2009 by recording a song for the film Murder 2, and later gained wider recognition in 2011 with the song ‘Phir Mohabbat Karne Chala Hai Tu’. Over the years, he has recorded songs across multiple genres, including romantic, Sufi, devotional, and melancholic music. His work has found audiences beyond Bollywood, with popularity extending to international platforms. His voice may still be heard in some upcoming films for which recordings have already been completed.
