CBSE Relaxes Admission Rules: Up to 45 Students Allowed Per Section Under Special Circumstances

CBSE has provided relief to schools by now allowing admissions of up to 45 students in a section, but this relaxation will only apply in special circumstances.

CBSE Update: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a significant decision, providing major relief to schools across the country. Schools are now permitted to admit a maximum of 45 students in each section from classes 1 to 12 under special circumstances. However, in normal circumstances, this limit will remain at 40 students, as before.

This decision will provide relief to schools where the number of students is increasing rapidly and they were facing difficulties in admitting students due to the limited availability of seats. This new system of CBSE will now provide flexibility to schools in such situations.

Who will benefit from this rule?

CBSE has clarified that this relaxation will only be given in special circumstances, and schools will have to maintain a proper record of it. The circumstances under which more than 40 students can be admitted include:

  • Students whose parents have been transferred, especially in the case of employees working in defense services, central government, public sector undertakings (PSUs), or the private sector.
  • Students who fall into the "Essential Repeat" category, meaning they have to study in the same class again for some reason.
  • Students suffering from serious illness who have experienced interruptions in their studies due to medical reasons.
  • When students leaving hostels need to be admitted to a new school.
  • Students who wish to re-enroll in the same class with the aim of improving their performance.

Schools will have to follow these rules

CBSE has also instructed schools that if more than 40 students are admitted to a section, it will be mandatory to record the complete details as per the rules.

Classes 9 to 12: The reason for admission has to be uploaded on the CBSE portal, and its details must also be recorded in the admission/withdrawal register.

Classes 1 to 8: The reason will only be written in the admission/withdrawal register.

In addition, it has been made mandatory for all classes to enter admission information on the OASIS portal. This is being done for the purpose of transparency and monitoring.

Limits and standards also set

CBSE has also clarified that in no case can more than 45 students be admitted to a section. It will also be mandatory to follow certain physical standards for this.

  • The size of the classroom should be at least 500 square feet.
  • It is necessary to ensure a built-up area of at least 1 square meter for each student.
  • These standards have been determined according to Clause 4.8 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018.

Why is this decision important for schools?

In schools located in many large and small cities across the country, the number of students is increasing rapidly, but due to the limited number of seats and classrooms, schools often have difficulty admitting eligible students. Especially when students are in special circumstances such as transfer cases or illness.

Both private and government schools will benefit

This decision will be equally applicable not only to private schools affiliated with CBSE but also to government schools. Especially in areas where it becomes necessary to admit many students to the same school due to the limited number of schools.
