Avian influenza virus: The National Zoological Park in Delhi, or Delhi Zoo, has been temporarily closed from August 30th until further notice. This step was taken after the confirmation of the H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus (Bird Flu). Director Sanjeet Kumar stated that samples from two sarus cranes were sent to Bhopal, where the virus was confirmed. Strict biosecurity measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of the virus to other animals, birds, and staff at the zoo. The closure aims to ensure the safety of visitors and to prevent the dissemination of the infection.
Temporary Closure of Delhi Zoo Following Bird Flu Outbreak
The National Zoological Park in Delhi, also known as Delhi Zoo, has been closed to visitors until further notice due to the spread of Bird Flu. An order from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change indicated that the H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus was confirmed in two samples. The decision to temporarily close the zoo was made in view of safety and disease surveillance.
During this period, the care for all animals and birds residing in the zoo will continue. Zoo supervisors, officials, and staff will adhere to Avian Influenza protocols to minimize the risk of infection spread. Director's Response and Investigation
Sanjeet Kumar, Director of the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, reported that following the deaths of two sarus cranes in the water bird enclosure, samples were sent to Bhopal. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases found both samples positive for the H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus on August 28th. Subsequently, immediate actions were initiated to prevent the virus from spreading to other animals, birds, and staff within the zoo.
The Director stated that intensive monitoring and strict biosecurity measures have been put in place to control the infection. All staff members have been mandated to work under special protocols to prevent the virus from spreading and to ensure safety.
